Johnnie Alexander | Author Chat

Grab your cup of coffee or tea (or hot chocolate for Johnnie), and maybe a cookie or two, and join me for a chat with...
Award-winning author Johnnie Alexander. She is a wannabe vagabond with a heart for making memories. Her CBA-bestselling novel, Where Treasure Hides, has been translated into Dutch and Norwegian. She is cohost of Writers Chat, a weekly internet show, marketing chair for the Mid-South Christian Writers Conference, and past president of both the ACFW Memphis and ACFW Central Florida chapters.

Let's get real...

Would you rather live in a story world you’ve created for a year OR live three days in a story world someone else has created?
I would love to visit Middle Earth. Since it’s only three days, I guess I need to choose a specific place since I can’t exactly fly from one locale to another. Which shall it be? Rivendell? Lothlorien? The Shire? I’ll just close my eyes, tap the heels of my elf boots three times, and see where I end up. (Please not anywhere near Mordor.)

Two truths and a lie:
1. I won a prize on a TV game show.
2. I’ve taken my dog’s medicine.
3. I rear-ended three different cars in six months.

Name three places you’d like to travel to & why.
1. I want to travel around Europe on the train—and this fall I’m going to! My sister and I are getting passes so we can visit four or five countries. We’ll see if the reality is as awesome as the dream. (We’re also spending a week in Lisbon.)
2. New Zealand—that whole Middle Earth thing, you know! And while I’m there, maybe I’ll take a detour to Australia.
3. I’ve been to about half the continental United States. I’d like to road-trip around the rest of the country.

What’s one of your favorite books?
Les Miserables

Do you have a nickname? Care to share?
My grandkids call me Malize. The reason why is complicated and not that interesting, but it’s a combo of Mom and Leez.

Coffee or tea?
Neither! Give me cocoa instead please.

Cats or dogs or both?
Dogs have a slight edge over cats. I have two canine buddies. Rugby is my princely papillon who has treed more than one raccoon despite his small size. And Griff is my happy-go-lucky collie who gets the zoomies most evenings. Have you ever seen a fifty-pound collie toss a toy in the air then slide across the room to get it? Very entertaining! He’s also skilled at dripping water everywhere.

Which of your characters do you secretly have a crush on?
I thought it was AJ Sullivan, the hero of Where She Belongs. But I took the Misty Willow Hero Quiz (created by my talented marketing team at Revell) and got Gabe Kendall, the hero of What Hope Remembers.

You can take the quiz, too—be sure and let us know who you get!

When Amy Somers loses her job as a lobbyist, she moves to Misty Willow, well aware that she’s crossing bridges she’d burned years before. With all the mistakes she’s made and the uncaring things she’s done–even to her own family–she can hardly believe that happiness will find her, especially when Gabe Kendall, her first crush and her first kiss, rides back into her life atop a buckskin mare.

A former Marine, Gabe is at loose ends after serving a prison sentence for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He sees beyond Amy’s hard exterior to the girl he once knew and loved, and he longs to see her open her heart. Yet with his vision clouded by shame for his past and fears about the future, he finds it difficult to see the path ahead.

But the memory of that long-ago kiss just may have the power to reignite a romance that brings out the best in both of them.

Someplace Familiar
by Teresa Tysinger

Published: May 30, 2017
Publisher: Good Day Publishing
Purchase: Someplace Familiar

-->Artist Livy Johnson needs a fresh start. That's what a broken heart and forgotten dreams can do to a person. On little more than a whim, she reclaims her grandmother’s old mountain cottage in quaint Laurel Cove, North Carolina and vows to restore its original charm. When she literally collides with childhood friend, Jack Bowdon, Livy wonders if she’s back for an entirely different reason.
Jack can’t believe his childhood crush is back. As the owner of Bowdon's Supplies, and once again the town's most eligible bachelor, he offers to help Livy with repairs. Together they embark on the project—and an undeniable whirlwind romance.

But it’s not all smooth sailing. Can they survive the destructive pain of their pasts to discover God’s grace waiting to renovate their hearts?

Get to know Teresa...

--> Who is your favorite secondary character? Without a doubt, my favorite secondary character in Someplace Familiar is Jack’s (our hero) Aunt Bea. She runs the Laurel Cove Inn and is the first to befriend Livy when she comes into town. Aunt Bea is spunky, funny, and full of all the southern charm you could ever hope for. My favorite characteristic is the way she calls everyone “honey” or “dear.” Love!

What’s one thing you must have/do in the morning?
I’m not embarrassed to say that I need my morning coffee to function at full-speed. However, I never started drinking the stuff much until after my daughter was born. My favorite way to drink it is iced with caramel flavor.

Which of your characters do you secretly have a crush on?

I’d be lying if I didn’t say Jack was my not-so-secret character crush. What better perk for romance authors than being able to write our own fantasy leading man? He’s tall, a little rugged, but genuinely kind and tenderhearted. Swoon!

Johnnie Alexander | Spread the Christmas Joy

The Moments We Treasure

My children never dreamed of a white Christmas. They never found ice skates or sleds or thick woolen mittens under the tree. We didn’t spend the afternoon making snow angels or building snowmen.

You see, my children grew up in the Sunshine State. The thermometer might dip low enough for us to wish we had thick woolen mittens, but the cold spell never lasted long.

Each child eventually asked that all important question: when are the birds going to fly south for the winter?

I’d smile, quite amused, and explain that here, Florida, was where the birds flew to for the winter.

Christmas memories. Family traditions.

These are the moments we treasure in our hearts.

A young Hebrew girl, who was there on that very first Christmas Day, treasured moments in her heart, too.

As much as I love that angels appeared to shepherds and that shepherds worshipped the newborn baby in the manger, the verse I find most enchanting is Luke 2:19. In the NIV, it reads:

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

The word translated treasured is the Greek word syntēreō. In the KJV, the word is translated as kept.

It means both to preserve and to “keep within one's self . . . a thing, lest it be forgotten”(Blue Letter Bible).

Syntēreō is only used in three other places in the New Testament.

We read in Matthew 9:17 and Luke 5:38 that new wine is put in new bottles so “both are preserved.”

Mark 6:20 says “Herod feared John . . . and ‘syntēreō-ed’ him.” The KJV translates the word as observed while the NIV says Herod “was greatly puzzled.”

I picture Mary as being as greatly puzzled by her visit from an angel, by Elizabeth’s miraculous pregnancy as well as her own, the shepherds, the Magi’s gifts, and Joseph’s dreams as Herod, about thirty years later, was greatly puzzled by his prisoner John.

She pondered these things, wondering what they meant and what the future held for her precious child. She treasured all these moments, hiding them deep into her heart.

In a few weeks, we’ll once again be celebrating Jesus’ birth. As Christmas nears, we’ll be holding onto family traditions or perhaps making new ones. We’ll be creating new memories to be treasured.

Amidst all the celebrating, the worship, the feasting, and the exchanging of gifts, may we pause to treasure the events that Mary treasured and to ponder them in our own hearts.

I wish you a white and snowy Christmas—or a green and sunny one. Just depends on where you live. 😄

You and Writing

Tell us a little bit about your writing journey...
The dream of writing has always been with me, but it was too big of a dream to do more than dabble here and there. After all, this was a dream that came true for other people—I never thought it would for me.

An important turning point happened in 2003 when I heard about a relatively new challenge called National Novel Writing Month. I joined other participants in writing a 50,000-word novel in the thirty days of November.

And despite ending up with an incredible mess, I loved how the characters came to life, did the unexpected, and became “real.”

A few more years passed before I decided that if I was ever going to make a go of this, I couldn’t wait any longer. (A milestone birthday probably had something to do with this “now or never” attitude.)

I attended conferences, entered contests, and wrote more stories. My debut novel came out in January 2013—a little over nine years after that first NaNoWriMo experience.

Your Writing

Let's talk about your book...

What’s the theme? How did you come up with it?
The hero of When Love Arrives is Brett Somers, the “bad boy” of the series’ first story (Where She Belongs). From what I already knew about him and as part of his character growth, I knew he needed a heroine unlike anyone he’d ever been attracted to before. Additionally, she needed to be immune to his famous dimpled smile.

In my thinking-about-how-they’ll-meet stage, I realized the heroine intensely disliked Brett because of something he had done. Though it took a long time—months in fact—to understand exactly what that was, the themes of vengeance and forgiveness were a natural part of the story.

Was there a passage of scripture you came across or used while writing it that you’d like to share?
Two Scriptures are important to the story. The first only appears at the beginning of chapter one:

Praise be to the Lord, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege (Psalm 31:21).

Brett is definitely “under siege” in this story, and his eyes are gradually opened to the wonders of God’s love.

The second occurs in one of my favorite scenes. When Brett experiences his darkest crisis, his moment of confronting who he’d been, he is comforted by his cousin’s fiancée’s seven-year-old daughter. She tells him a verse she learned when her father was killed:

I trusted in the Lord when I said, “I am greatly afflicted” (Psalm 116:10).

This verse sticks with Brett and becomes a kind of mantra for him.

Did you get to do any fun research for the book?
I tried. One of the early scenes is set in the historic Ohio Theater, and I very much wanted to go inside and look around. But I live in Tennessee, and the timing didn’t work out.

I was only able to stop there one Saturday on my way to the airport and take photos of the exterior. Fortunately, one of my cousins had once taken interior photos which he shared with me. (Thank you, Tom!)

What’s your favorite snack while writing?
Twizzlers. And Coke. The closer I get to deadline the more Twizzlers I eat and the more Coke I drink.

Writing

Let’s talk about your writing life...

Are you a Panster or Plotter?
On that spectrum, I’m more of a pantser, but I prefer the term organic writer. I begin with a few ideas about the characters and things that should happen. Then I write and wait to see what surprises will show up. Sometimes it’s rough going, but the characters haven’t failed me yet.

However! My next contracts are for two cozy mysteries. The proposal for the first required a chapter-by-chapter summary. So now I’m writing my first story as a plotter. I’m eager to see how the process will be different.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors for writing and/or publishing?
I always answer this question the same way: attend writers’ conferences, enter reputable contests, and join a critique group. Each of these proved to be an invaluable milestone on my own writing journey. I learned so much from workshops, the feedback from judges, and my critique partners. Conferences are also a great place to network.

Are there any books or resources you could recommend to younger writers looking to grow in their craft?

Two of my favorites are Story Trumps Structure by Steven James and The Fire in Fiction by Donald Maass. Next up on my reading list is The Art of Character by David Corbett.

You

What's one chore you hate doing?

The litter box I do not like.
It makes my nose go closed.
But kittens go then go again.
“Outdoors! Outdoors!” I propose.
They stare at me with cattish eyes
While I scoop scoop scoop the gross.
And after taking a few cleansing breaths
A silly poem I compose.

What's your favorite chore?

I love to run errands.
To the post office, gas station and store.
The dry cleaners, the car wash, the vet.
B&N, Target, and more.
Then lunch with my Kindle
And the story du jour.

This is why I’m better known for my fiction than my poetry.

If your book became a movie, who would you cast for your main characters?
In Brett’s eyes, Dani is an adorable “slip of a girl” who is nothing like the women he usually dates. A brunette Shailene Woodley, the star of the Divergent movies, is perfect to play Dani.

But who is perfect to play Brett?
I haven’t a clue.

The guy is too handsome for his own good with blond hair, blue-eyes, deep dimples, and a charming smile. And he’s thirty years old. Any suggestions?

September is Classical Music Month (who knew?). In keeping with that theme, do you have a favorite character from a classical novel?
Oh, yes! One of my favorite novels is Les Miserables and its protagonist, Jean Valjean, is an amazingly complex character.

I’m also going to say Milly, Adam’s bride in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The movie may not be classical music but it’s a classic musical. :)

What are you currently reading?
After watching the first season of Poldark, I got hooked on the twelve-book series written by Winston Graham. I’m on the eleventh one, The Twisted Sword. Mr. Graham also wrote Marnie which Alfred Hitchcock turned into a movie.

What’s your favorite book?
I have several so it’s always hard to choose just one. Today it’s The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien.

What are you reading right now?
I’m reading the Polkark series of books by Winston Graham. After zipping through the first three on my Kindle, now I’m waiting for the fourth one to arrive. Can you believe it’s not available as an ebook?!

You and Writing

Tell us a little bit about yourself and writing...

An interviewer asked me what I would do if I couldn’t write. The question paralyzed me. Other than my relationship with God, writing is my why. (tweet this) I write about the themes that tug at my heart, especially the importance of creating cherished memories with those we love. My hope is that my stories and characters linger in the reader’s heart long after she closes the book.

Emilie here: And what better reason? Love it!

Your Writing

Tell us a little bit about your book...

This story fulfills a dream my protagonist and I share—to restore a childhood home where happy memories were made. Since circumstances never allowed me to make that dream come true, I created a character who could. But the cost for her was steep, and along the way she found a different dream.

What is one take-away from your book that you hope readers identify with?
Material legacies matter—heirlooms, keepsakes, cherished belongings—but our spiritual legacies, because they have eternal value, matter so much more.

What’s the theme? How did you come up with it?
Both main characters, Shelby and AJ, have been greatly influenced by their relationships with their grandparents. Their “present” is affected by decisions and events that occurred before they were born. Our actions influence and affect future generations in ways we may never imagine. (tweet this) I think it’s important to keep truth in mind.

Though my own decisions haven’t always been the best, I love creating memories for my children and grandchildren. Part of that is just being joyful in day-to-day life. This is what I hope they remember about me.

Was there a passage of scripture you came across or used while writing it that you’d like to share?
Years ago, God blessed me with two similar passages that have encouraged me in my spiritual journey:
He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me (Psalm 18:19);
I will be glad and rejoice in your love . . . You have not given me into the hands of the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place” (Psalms 31:7-8).
In the novel, Shelby is seeking the “spacious place” God has provided for her and her family.

Did you get to do any fun research for the book?
The story is set where I grew up. It’s a familiar place and a mostly happy place. But I didn’t pay much attention to seasonal things such as exactly when certain crops were grown or flowers bloomed. Since I don’t live there anymore, Facebook was my research friend. I’d ask a question, such as “what time is it getting dark in central Ohio these days?” and I’d get answers. I appreciate everyone who made suggestions, provided photographs, and cheered me on.

We're your characters easy to pin down or did you discover them along the way as you wrote the book?
This may sound strange, but it’s true: my heroine was reticent. Difficult. Hard to understand. Until I changed her name. After that, we got along just fine.

What's the most random thing you had to Google for the story?
It wasn’t a Google search, but I asked Facebook friends what ice cream was best when going through a bad break-up. People really engaged with that one, and it was fun to see all the answers.

Emilie here: Ok, so I have to know! Readers - what is the best break-up ice cream? (tweet this)

Writing

Let's talk about your writing life...

What’s your encouragement for younger writers aside from “keep writing”?
My advice is to join a critique group for the fellowship and learning-by-doing aspect (tweet this), enter contests for the unbiased feedback, and attend writers conferences for the networking and education. Pray for guidance, wisdom, protection, and opportunity.

Are you a Panster or Plotter?
I think of myself as an intuitive writer, so yes, I’m mostly a pantser. *smile*

What does your writing process look like?
My writing process is as much a work-in-progress as the manuscript I’m now writing. Both Where She Belongs and Where Treasure Hides started out as NaNoWriMo novels, and both went through extensive revisions before they were contracted. The last novel I finished is the first one that was contracted before it was written. That was scary! Now I’m facing that again. Still scary!

I realized, though, that I tend to write in thirds. This isn’t exact, but I write about 1/3 of the story then start over. This time I write about 2/3 of the story then start over again. The third time through, I write till the end. This is reminiscent of writing for grad school—I spent the majority of my time getting the opening paragraphs or pages as solid as possible before finishing the assigned paper. I’m doing the same thing with my story—establishing a solid foundation before moving forward. I’m intentionally using this plan to write my current novel.

Emilie here: What a great idea! I think I do this to an extent - but not intentionally...yet!

How long did it take to publish your first book?
The short answer is about ten years though I am a published poet and essayist. I fell in love with writing fiction the first time I participated in NaNoWriMo in 2003. Where She Belongs began as my NaNoWriMo novel for 2005. I pitched it at conferences, learned more about craft, and wrote two new novels. That second new novel, Where Treasure Hides, became my debut novel and was published as an ebook in 2013, in Dutch in 2014, and as a print copy in 2015. A Norwegian edition is in the future.

What did you learn along the path to publishing that you’d care to share as encouragement?
Other writers can become your best friends. (tweet this) The Christian writing community is made up of amazing people who encourage, support, and truly care for one another. These relationships are priceless.

Emilie here: I fully agree!

Where do you find inspiration for your story/characters?
Sometimes it begins with a heart-tug—like the love of a childhood home or the juxtaposition of saving art and saving children during World War II. And sometimes the characters and I find the heart-tug of their story together.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors for writing and/or publishing?
Finish a novel. Whether you write a fast and messy draft—which is great for getting words on the screen—or take a more methodical approach, finish the manuscript. You’ll learn so much about moving characters from one place to another, nuances of gestures, character motivation and development, being sure each scene actually has a purpose, and more by writing a full-length novel. This doesn’t mean you’ll end up with publishable manuscript. You probably won’t.

But remember this: you can’t revise a sentence you haven’t written. (tweet this)

And one more tip: so often when I get stuck, the answer is in the story. (tweet this) Sometimes I take a walk or fold laundry or wash my hair before I realize it. But there it is—something I had written, perhaps without giving it a lot of thought—that turns out to be vital. Get the words down. Learn as you go. Then edit, revise, polish.

Emilie here: Such great advice here, Johnnie!

Are there any books or resources you could recommend to younger writers looking to grow in their craft?
Two of my favorite books are Story Trumps Structure by Steven James and Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Browne and King.

How do you grow in your writing craft?
I believe in lifelong learning so I read books about writing, attend conferences, and critique/edit for others. It also helps to read well-written novels.

You

What’s one thing you are looking forward to in the New Year?
I am very excited about 2016. Where She Belongs, the first book in the Misty Willow Series, just released. My first novella, The Healing Promise, releases in the Courageous Brides Collection in July. And When Love Arrives, Misty Willow Series Book #2, releases in September. To have three stories release in one year is beyond anything I ever dreamed possible.

What are your writing goals for this New Year?
I’m working on the third Misty Willow Series story which releases in May 2017. I plan to create another multi-series proposal for my publisher, and I’d love to write more novellas.

What are you currently reading?
This is a crazy list. I’m reading The RVer’s Bible because I have this crazy idea to live in an RV (and travel) someday. I’m also reading:
This weekend I’ll be curling up with Patricia Bradley’s latest manuscript. She’s my critique partner so I get to read her stories before they’re printed. (So fun!)

Thanks so much for having me as your guest, Emilie. I enjoyed your questions and really appreciate you!

Emilie here: You're welcome, Johnnie. Loved having you as my guest! Such great advice and encouragement here.

Where She Belongs
by Johnnie Alexander

January 5, 2016
Revell
Purchase: Where She Belongs

Shelby Kincaid is ready to move on from her grief. With high hopes for the future, she longs to purchase her family’s ancestral homestead so she can raise her young daughters in the only place she ever truly belonged. She plans to transform the abandoned house into the perfect home of her memories. But she’ll have her work cut out for her.

AJ Sullivan never wanted the homestead. Inherited as a punishment from his grandfather, it has sat empty for fifteen years and fallen into ruin. He’s glad to finally unload it. But a clean break isn’t possible when he can’t get the young widow Shelby off his mind.

Get to know Johnnie...

Do you have a nickname? Care to share?
My grandchildren (and sometimes my daughters) call me Malize. It’s a silly story. My older daughter, Bethany, was a high school cheerleader. At one game, the announcer mispronounced her name which my younger daughter Jill found hysterical. As she told the story to others, the mispronunciation worsened. Jill started calling Bethany, Belize. In retaliation, Bethany called Jill, Jilleze. And somewhere along the line, I became Malize. It stuck.

If you could live in a fantasy world, who’s would it be?
Definitely Middle Earth. I’d love to visit Rohan, the Shire, Lothlorien, and Rivendell.

Would you rather go to the future or go to the past?
I’d like to go into the past and talk with my ancestors. My mom’s parents died before I was born so I never got a chance to know them.
