Sandpiper Cove

Publisher: Revell
Purchase: Sandpiper Cove

Hope Harbor police chief Lexie Graham has plenty on her plate raising her son alone and dealing with a sudden rash of petty theft and vandalism in her coastal Oregon hometown. As a result, she has zero time for extracurricular activities—including romance. Ex-con Adam Stone isn't looking for love either—but how ironic is it that the first woman to catch his eye is a police chief? Yet wishing for things that can never be is foolish. Nevertheless, when Lexie enlists Adam's help to keep a young man from falling into a life of crime, sparks begin to fly. And as they work together, it soon becomes apparent that God may have a different—and better—future planned for them than either could imagine.

Favorite season?
Spring. It seems so full of hope.

What's your favorite chore?
A chore, by definition, is something you’d rather not do. So I have no favorites!

What’s one thing you must have/do in the morning?
A cup of hot chocolate and a piece of my homemade bacon/cheese cornbread.

Dorothy got sucked into a tornado.

Alice fell down a hole.

Wendy flew to Neverland.

Kamryn? She tripped down the stairs.

Now, Kamryn Kensington finds herself in a strange new world. Within minutes of her arrival, she dodges an archer’s arrow and avoids getting sliced up by a cosplay reject holding a dagger to her throat. And that’s before the storyteller’s breath brings stories to life.

Home is the mission—to return to her family and pursue her life’s dream of art and travel. Yet the longer she’s in the Land of Ur, the harder it is not to feel for the people she meets. Even her artistic side can’t help but breathe in the beautiful wonder and magic of this new world. So when the Oracle hands her a different quest, she takes it on the condition he sends her home afterward.

No one thought to warn her of a jealous queen and her dragon minions. Or that, by helping her, the cute storyteller would go crazy. Or that her heart would rip in two when she left. Those would’ve been great facts to know ahead of time.

Considering that nothing in Ur is what it seems, the mission proves to be more than she ever imagined. But more than her own future will be in jeopardy if Kamryn doesn’t succeed.

Favorite season?
Spring! Hands down. I love how the world awakens and brightens after the dreary gray of winter. Everything becomes so vibrant and green, not to mention all the beautiful blooms. *sigh*

If you were a superhero, what would be your super power?
Hmm. With so many cool powers out there, it’s hard to choose. But for me, I’d love the power of speed. Not only could I run super fast and visit amazing locations, I would be able to tackle and dominate my mountain of a to-do list in record time. Which would, of course, leave more time for reading, eating chocolate, and creating memories.

If you were stranded on an island what are three things you couldn’t live without?
Necessary items aside (like food, shelter, weapons, etc), I don’t think I could live without lip balm. I can handle having leathery sunbaked skin, but not crunchy lips. Next, I would have to have a hair tie. My curly hair has a mind of its own and requires something to wrangle it in. If hair products aren’t available, a nice strong hair tie would be enough to force it into submission. Lastly, books. Must have them to fully enjoy my tropical environment.

Tangled Webs by Irene Hannon | Re:View

Tangled Webs indeed! As Irene Hannon’s third book in the Men of Valor series, I had a lot of high expectations for this book and I was not disappointed! I had long since wondered about the third brother in the series. Finn, the troubled one. He was a bit of an enigma to me and mysteries like that are just begging to be solved!

I started this book and got through the first few pages then picked it up the next day and finished it! I don't usually have time to read like this, but I was glad I did for this book. It’s a rollercoaster of ups and downs, twists and turns, and questions at every one of those turns. I would say that it started out with less action than her other books but, because of the way she told the story, you didn’t feel like it was slow at all. The unanswered questions and other plot elements pull you along.

I really really really loved Finn. Definitely my favorite brother out of them all, and Dana was a great female lead as well. In Irene’s characteristic “love at first sight” type of romance, I like that they were both cautious (for various reasons) and took some time to get to know one another.

I also enjoyed her secondary characters immensely, especially Hazel! I love the small town feel and the Walleye was perfect! Irene also included such a compelling story line for her somewhat-ani-hero and I just appreciated the realness to the character and how she perfectly detailed the course of events that led to all of the decisions made (sorry to be vague here but I don’t want to spoil anything).

The only thing I didn’t exactly love was how Finn’s brothers, and Finn himself, use the term “hot” so often to describe Dana. It was like this in all of the books and…though I totally get it, I think one use of that term is about enough for me. But hey, it doesn’t affect the story and it’s probably just a personal thing anyway.

I would definitely recommend this to fans of romantic suspense. There’s a good bit of both in the book, though maybe less action than normal the story makes up for it in my opinion. It’s a great third book in my opinion and makes me look forward to her next series “Code of Honor” which releases fall of 2017!

My Rating: 4.5*

Get to know Irene...

You and Writing

Tell us a little bit about you...
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, but I like to tell people I made my “professional” debut at the age of 10 when I was one of the honorees in a complete-the-story contest sponsored by a national children’s magazine. I truly believe storytelling is a gift, like any other talent. I’ve always wanted to be able to paint, but if I took art lessons until I was 95, every person I tried to draw would still look like a stick figure. I don’t see with the eyes of an artist. So I paint with words.

Your Writing

Let's talk about your book...

Why did you write it?
Sea Rose Lane is the second book set in my fictional seaside village of Hope Harbor on the Oregon coast. I knew when I was writing the first one that this little town held many captivating stories, and thankfully my publisher agreed. I mean, how can you not love a town where hearts heal—and love blooms? I should point out, too, that each Hope Harbor book stands completely alone. Stories don’t carry over from book to book.

Do you have a favorite character in this work? If so, why?
I love all my main characters—but I also love a few of the secondary characters who appear in every book: Charley, the ageless taco-making artist who seems to be able to see into everyone’s heart; the two town clergymen, with their friendly rivalry and deep friendship; even Floyd and Gladys, my seagull couple. This is a town filled with fascinating people who are easy to love and hard to forget.

What is one take-away from your book that you hope readers identify with?
I hope readers close the last page uplifted—and with a renewed belief that no matter how tough life might get, there’s always the possibility of a happy ending. I also hope they have a better appreciation for the tremendous power of love to transform lives.

What’s the theme? How did you come up with it?
Hope is the theme that resonates in Sea Rose Lane—and in every book set in Hope Harbor, as the name of the town suggests. In this story, my hero and heroine find love and a new beginning, but the theme of hope is front and center in my subplot, too. The two secondary characters in this story touched my heart in a special way.

Did you get to do any fun research for the book?
Yes! I visited the spectacular Oregon coast to research the setting. For many years, I’ve wanted to set a book…or two…or three…or ??? in this beautiful part of the country. I was convinced it would provide the perfect locale for the town I’d already named Hope Harbor. That research trip exceeded all my expectations. In Florence, I found charming storefronts and to-die-for cinnamon rolls. In Bandon, I learned about seagull romance. In Cape Perpetua, I got up close and personal with amazing starfish. In Brookings, I watched the sun set in a secluded cove with a silver-white harbor seal for company. And everywhere I went, I savored the endless, sandy beaches and sea stacks. When I got home, I took all those bits and pieces of real-life coastal Oregon and created Hope Harbor!

Emilie here: You're talking about the places I grew up going on vacation to! In fact, I was JUST in Brookings last week :) I've long decided I would set a series on the Oregon coast because it has fed my imagination since I was a child camping there. Love that you have seen the same beauty there!

Writing

Let's talk about your writing...

How many rejection letters did you get before being accepted by a publisher?
I’ve lost count. Lots and lots, though! And that can be very discouraging—enough to make some people quit. But I’m not the kind of person who likes to admit defeat, and I believed in my stories. So through rejection after rejection, I kept writing. By the time I sold, I had three finished manuscripts…and my first publisher bought them all. Perseverance does pay—as does the willingness to continually learn and grow as a writer. I learn something new with every book I write.

Are you a Panster or Plotter?
I’m a hybrid. I spend a lot of time getting to know my characters before I begin a book, and I have a general story concept, but the action develops chapter by chapter…sometimes line by line!

Emilie here: I feel like I too am a hybrid - I like the "not knowing" part of creating a plot, but I get to a point where I just need to now how it's all going to work out *hehe*.

What does your writing process look like?
I start every day by reviewing the words I wrote the previous day or two. Once I finish a chapter, I review and revise it until I deem it ready to go into my master document. After I finish my revisions for the day, I write new words. Because of this polish-as-I-go process, I have a final draft at the end. I’ll let the manuscript sit for a few days, then do a full read over a day or two to make any final polishes or tweaks. So I’m not one of those writers who throws the story down as fast as possible and then does a major rewrite. That process does work for a lot of people, though!

Emilie here: Ohhh, that's not something I've heard of before - the polish as you go. I like it!

What is your favorite and least favorite part of the writing process?
The upfront thinking phase, where I’m trying to get a handle on the general plot and scope of the book, is my least favorite part. Even though it’s critical to my process, it feels unproductive because no new words are appearing every day. My favorite part is the polishing process—the stuff I do first thing every morning with the words that haven’t yet been moved into my master document. I love playing with words that are already on the page. That’s when the magic happens for me.

How do you balance your writing life with “real” life? Any tips or tricks to share?
This is a constant challenge. Writing can easily take over if you let it—and I did earlier in my career, after I left my day job to write full-time. But that’s a recipe for burnout. So now I try to take weekends off from writing. I might still do some business-related chores, or work on promotional items, but I don’t write unless I’ve gotten seriously behind on my page count for the week.

You

What is one thing you like to do to relax when you aren’t writing?
I love to sing, and one of my favorite non-writing activities is performing in community musical theater productions. I’ve been fortunate to play the leading role in many classic musicals, including Brigadoon, South Pacific, The King and I, Oklahoma, Anything Goes, and numerous others. When I’m not singing on stage, I’m a soloist at my church.

Emilie here: How fun! I love musicals! And I sing as well. I think having those extra hobbies are the best - they can be relaxing and fun.

Thinking of Fathers Day, is there a story you’d like to share with the readers about your father?
My dad was born in rural Ireland, where he lived until his late twenties in a small cottage without electricity or running water. After he came to America and married, he worked hard to support his family, at one point holding three jobs. Through the years, he’s always been in my corner—and he’s a shining example of what a father should be. In recent years, he’s devoted himself to caring for my mom, who’s had health issues and needs a lot of help. I think the dedication in the third book in Men of Valor suspense book (Tangled Webs, 10/16) says it all:

To my father, James Hannon—
he most unselfish man I’ve ever met.

As I conclude my Men of Valor series,
thank you for reminding me by example
that valor isn’t found only in grand, sweeping gestures,
but in quietly doing—day after day, with
kindness, grace, humility and love—
what needs to be done.

You will always be my hero.

What are you currently reading?
Becky Wade’s Her One and Only.

Emilie here: What a great interview Irene! Thank you so much for being my guest and for sharing your sweet dedication to your father. My heart melted! Love it :)

Favorite season? Spring. I love watching the world come back to life after the cold, gray days of winter. It’s such a hope-filled season.

What’s one thing you must have/do in the morning?
A cup of hot chocolate (even if it’s 95 degrees outside!) and a piece of homemade bacon/cheese cornbread. Okay, that’s two—but both are essential! That’s been my breakfast for as long as I can remember.

If you were stranded on an island what are three things you couldn’t live without?
Other than the necessities (food/shelter/water)—writing material and sunscreen!

Thin Ice by Irene Hannon | RE:View

In this second book to the Men of Valor series, Irene Hannon creates an interesting, plot-twisting read following the second oldest McGregor brother, Lance.

Christy Reed is a former Olympic athlete and Lance McGregor joins the FBI after being a Delta Force operator. Talk about two high-octane people meeting over the surprise of Chrisy's sister "coming back to life" after supposedly dying in a fire. True to Irene Hannon form, Lance and Christy realize early on that there's more than just attraction there, but the roadblock of the case is enough to (mostly) keep them apart for the majority of the book.

I think my favorite part of the book was the McGregor brothers! This is totally a personal thing, but I always tend to enjoy reading (and writing) from the male POV more than the female (most of the time). I feel like Irene did a great job of capturing them. What will happen with Finn???

I also feel like Irene included just the right amount of faith elements to show where Christy and Lance were in regards to what they believed and were struggling about, but not to "preach" about where they should be. What was shared, I liked, and felt it was very natural to the story.

One issue I had at the very beginning was the fact that freshly minted Agent Lance McGregor immediately fights an instant attraction of Christy Reed. I just...*sigh*. I understand a guy noticing that a girl is attractive but he was checking her out while on his very first assignment as an FBI agent. It just rubbed me the wrong way. I don't know, maybe that does happen, but it seemed completely unfounded (aside from physical attraction which happens--I get that) and a little premature.

@createexploreread
The other issue I had (without going into spoiler-details) is something that happens with regards to one of the secondary characters. The character makes a choice that just didn't sit well with me. It was really hard for me to get past it and see it as a "good" plot choice because of what I think it implies. This is, obviously, personal on my part, but I will say that it could be difficult to read for some.
***If you're interested to know why, see my comments at the bottom of this post. Note:  They do spoil the plot a little.

All in all, a good read. I really liked the quick pace of the ending as well. I'd recommend it to fans of Irene's work--same style as Buried Secrets etc.--and those who enjoy romantic suspense with more romance that knuckle-whitening thrills. I am interested in the last book in the series, mainly because I want to see where Finn comes in and what his story will be!

My rating: 3.8*
Purchase: Thin Ice (Men of Valor book 2)
Buried Secrets (Men of Valor book 1)

Book Description
(from Amazon)
After losing her parents in a car accident and her sister to a house fire, Christy Reed has been mired in grief. Life is finally starting to feel normal again when an envelope arrives in the mail--addressed in her sister's handwriting. And the note inside claims she is still alive.

FBI Special Agent Lance McGregor, a former Delta Force operator, is assigned to reopen the case, but he's coming up with more questions than answers. If Ginny Reed is still alive--who is the woman buried in her grave? Where is Ginny? And is Christy a pawn in a twisted cat-and-mouse game--or the target of a sinister plot? As he digs deeper, one thing becomes clear: whoever is behind the bizarre ruse has a deadly agenda.

Bestselling author and two-time Christy Award finalist Irene Hannon warms readers' hearts as they root for a romance between Lance and Christy, but she pulls out all the stops as this high-stakes thriller chills to the bone in a race to the finish.

***Spoiler Alert***
Just a note here: A secondary character makes a choice to take her own life (which helps to further the plot). It's not graphically depicted or anything like that, but the issue I take with it is the fact that the character was agonizing over the decision (a good thing) and focusing on her prayer book (also a good thing) but then does it anyway. It just...didn't sit well with me. It's one thing for her to have made the choice, one that was for the good of the main character at the end, but (to be bluntly honest) I just didn't like it. I feel like I saw ways around it and that it speaks a confusing message. Suicide isn't okay and is, in and of itself, a selfish act. In this case the woman was in a quandary and felt like she had no other means of escape, therefore making her "sacrifice" understandable but even in that situation I don't feel as if the Lord would condone taking your own life, no matter how dire the situation is. I guess we could look at other acts of sacrifice, like going into a battle where you were assured you would die, as a type of "suicide" but I see that as differently I guess.
For those of you that have read it I'd be interested to know what you thought. Did it bother anyone else?

Buried Secrets by Irene Hannon | RE:View

One dead body. One hard-working, former Chicago homicide detective. One ex-Navy SEAL.

I don't know about you, but that sounds like a recipe for a great romantic suspense novel, and I'm happy to tell you that it is! I jumped into Irene Hannon's latest series, Men of Valor, with gusto and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed Trapped and Deceived from her A Private Justice series and was interested to see what Buried Secrets was all about.

Lisa Grant is beautiful and smart. She's got an eye toward being the best police chief the small-town of Carson has seen, and brings with her a history of crime fighting from the tough area of Chicago.

Mac McGregor is a former Navy SEAL and tough as nails. Working for County as a detective, he's all about the case until he meets Lisa. Her stunning good looks and no-nonsense attitude surprise and intrigue him. Is she really as independent and tough as she comes across?

With the case spiraling in a direction neither of them expected, Mac and Lisa are tossed together to find a killer that will stop at nothing to cover their tracks! In the midst of all this, sparks fly and Mac and Lisa realize it's more than the summers heat that's warming them up.

I enjoyed this fun read and would definitely recommend it to all fans of Irene's earlier novels as well as those who like a good romantic suspense read. Though there isn't a lot of nail-biting suspense, there is plenty of intrigue and mystery to keep you turning pages late into the night. And did I mention the romantic tension? Because there's the perfect amount of that too!

The only thing I'll say is that there was quite a bit of pointing out how "hot" Lisa Grant was. I understand why in the context, but I fond it a little off-putting initially. Nothing that mars the story or creates a bad dynamic, but I really appreciated when those terms dissipated near the middle to end of the book. It definitely didn't stop me from reading, but it did draw my attention.

It's been three years of grief for Kate Marshall. When her husband and young son died in a boating accident she knew she had to move on, but can you ever truly let go?

Then, in the midst of the new life she has forged for herself in St. Louis, she sees a boy who looks just like her son. It couldn't be. Could it?

Enter Connor Sullivan, former Secret Service agent. His strength of character, not to mention his attractive good looks, catches Kate off guard when she decides to hire the agent turned PI to track down the boy she saw.

On this roller coaster ride of emotions and suspense, Irene Hannon will keep you guessing. She elaborately weaves together multiple perspectives and lays a patchwork of clues that are combined with skill by her hero and heroine.

I enjoyed this third installation of the Private Justice series as I enjoyed Trapped, book 2. I'd definitely recommend it for lovers of romantic suspense.

Trapped by Irene Hannon | RE:View

Laura Griffith faces a nightmare when she comes home to find out that her younger sister Dracy is gone. Entrusted to her care, Laura has found living with her sixteen-year-old sister wasn't as easy as she'd first assumed. The tension between them is nothing like the anxiety she faces knowing that her little sister is without protection during a snowstorm in February.

Laura turns to the handsome former ATF agent James "Dev" Deviln for assistance. The private investigation company he works for (introduced in Vanished which is the first book of the Private Justice series) provides the resources to find Darcy. Without a trail to follow, things begin to look dismal and Laura starts to wonder if they'll ever find her sister.

Questions arise as clues lead them down many different avenues without solid proof. With every day that passes, the possibility that Darcy will remain safe diminishes. Dev isn't optimistic about the outcome, but he's discovered is more invested in this case than he could have ever imagined.

I enjoyed this novel, though it did take until over half was done before I was "hooked". It was a slow path to begin and I really had to stick with it until things fired up toward the end. The ending was great and I was definitely satisfied, but I wish there could have been more action and a tid-bit more romance in the first half of the novel.

**Slight spoilers**

And, while we're on the subject of romance, due to the nature of the situation with a missing sister, I understand the difficulty in drawing the two main charters together. Laura's sister is missing, she can't just fall head over heels in love with the handsome James Devlin. Yet, there wasn't a lot of depth to them together. This felt like more of a psychological thriller that ended like a Christian Romantic Suspense novel. I'm not saying that's bad, just something to look out for!

All of that said, I'd still recommend this book. I'd say the ending mostly justifies the slower start and it will definitely keep you guessing!

When librarian Laura Griffth’s sixteen-year-old sister disappears on a frigid February day, leaving only a brief note behind, Laura resolves to do whatever it takes to track down the runaway teen. That includes recruiting ATF agent turned PI James “Dev” Devlin to help—but the deeper he digs, the more he begins to suspect that something sinister is at work in the girl’s disappearance. And the closer he gets to uncovering the truth, the clearer it becomes that the situation isn’t just dangerous—it’s deadly.
