Get to know Deb...

Who would I cast as my main characters?

HERO: Theo James for hero Wyatt Harrow. Age 34. Tall, dark and handsome with black hair and brown eyes. Wears a black Stetson and cowboy boots.

HEROINE: Kiera Knightly. Age 30. Long blond hair, golden brown eyes, petite.

What are the names of your pets?
Total dog lover here. I currently have a pack of four in the house—two of my own and two “grand-puppies” who are supposed to go home with their mommies (my daughters) in the near future.

Missy. I’ve always had a terrier mix in my house and heart, from as young as I can remember.

Sadie. I also have a thing for bully breeds. My favorite is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which is very popular in England (they are called the Nanny Dog!) but not so much in the United States. Sadie is a pitbull-shepherd mix.

Mea. Youngest’s Chihuahua mix. Funny story—she was planning to get a male and name him Romeo, but she fell in love with Mea. So technically, you guessed it, her formal name is Romea, but everyone calls her Mea.

Jack-Jack. I have no idea why we can’t just say, “Jack,” but there you go. This little purebred teacup Yorkshire terrier belongs to Middle.

What's your favorite chore?
This is going to sound odd, but I would have to say washing the dishes. My hidden motivation is that I get time to listen to my audiobooks. I don’t have nearly enough time to read, and since no one wants to be anywhere near the kitchen when it’s a mess, I have some uninterrupted listening time.

Deb Kastner | Spread the Christmas Joy

Loving Sacrifice

In the excitement and craziness of the Christmas season, in giving and getting gifts, counting down the Advent calendar, chocolate and cookies, it’s easy for the little ones (and for us adults, as well) to forget why all this is happening—because of a baby born over two thousand years ago in a stable in Bethlehem.

We’ve found a delightful way that our five-year-old grandson “Boo” LOVES that focuses on sacrificial giving at a child’s level. After we’ve put up the Nativity set together and talked about each character in the story, I give him a bag of hay. With each act of “loving sacrifice” he makes, he gets to add one piece of hay to the Baby Jesus’s manger--to make a softer, better bed for Him to sleep in (it gets a little crowded so most of it goes around the manger, but Boo gets the point.) Then, on Christmas eve, he brings the hay he’s collected and adds it to the manger in the church Nativity scene. It’s quite a poignant moment.

You’d be amazed at how excited he is at the many possibilities of performing acts of loving sacrifice. He is constantly on the lookout for new ways to help. Boo especially likes to hold the doors for his now-disabled Grampy. If he gets to push the handicap button that opens the doors automatically, so much the better!

I’m also on the watch for him, pointing out times I see him display honor and kindness. Like when he shares his toys or his snacks with his friends. Or when he gets an ice-pack for Granny’s aching back, complete with a carefully-folded dish towel around it.

It’s exciting to watch him discover the Reason for the Season on his own, and it keeps Christ at the forefront of Christmas, not only for Boo, but for all of us.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year, from my family to yours.

Beth K. Vogt, Deb Kastner & Becky Wade | New Novel News

You Can't Hurry Love
by Beth K. Vogt

Published: May 3, 2016
From: Howard Books
Purchase: You Can't Hurry Love

What if your long wait for love brings you back to your first love? You Can’t Hurry Love is the second 99 cents e-novella in my destination wedding series. It’s the romance of Elisabeth Straker, the penultimate “always the bridesmaid never the bride,” who was also the best friend of Bellamy, the heroine in Can’t Buy Me Love, the first e-novella in my destination wedding series.

Get to know Beth...

What’s one thing you must do in the morning?
One thing? Oh gosh, these “one thing” questions are so challenging! All I know is my days go so much better when I walk with my writing buddy and close friend, Mary. We walk. We talk. We pray. By the time we’re done, we feel better physically, emotionally, and spiritually. And we always finish the walks with one of us saying, “This is the day the Lord has made …” and then the other person says, “ …we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)

What are the names of your pets?
We have two dogs right now. Jo is my youngest daughter’s dog, and was a rescue puppy. Jo was found with her three sisters and a brother in an alley – no mama dog anywhere. The rescue shelter named them Meg, Jo, Amy, Beth, after the sisters in Little Women. The boy was named Chubbs. I don’t remember a “Chubbs” in Little Women. Then we also have Twister, our “grande dame” dachshund. She’s 14 years old, hard of hearing and she also can’t see very well anymore. She spends most of the day sleeping. When she’s awake, she’s cranky. But we love her.

Do you have a nickname? Care to share?
If I shared my childhood nickname you would have to swear to be my friend forever – and also swear to never, ever reveal it. My husband calls me “girl,” and I call him “boy.” Weird, I know. Another thing about nicknames: All of my children have nicknames. And I love to give my close friends nicknames. I think nicknames are fun and a special term of endearment.

The Cowboy's Twins

A Surprise Dad

Rancher Jax McKenna's gotten used to being on his own. Then surprise twin babies—daughters he never knew existed—arrive on his doorstep, and his world goes topsy-turvy. Strong, silent Jax has a way with horses. Not little girls! So when Texas newcomer Faith Duggan steps up to help, he's overwhelmed with gratitude. Faith's following her dream of buying a mustang rescue sanctuary. And she needs Jax, too. But after a tragic accident changed his life forever, Jax isn't used to letting anyone in. Could Faith be the exception…and the partner he's always searched for?

Get to know Deb...

Who is your favorite secondary character?
In my very first Serendipity, Texas novel Phoebe’s Groom (three series ago!) my heroine is encouraged to come to town by Jo Hawkins Spencer, the saucy, red-curled owner of the only restaurant in Serendipity, Cup O’ Jo’s Café. She wears unique and sometimes sarcastic t-shirts, is a second mother to most of the town and is the hub of Serendipity’s gossip mill. She’s appeared in every one of my Serendipity novels. I think everyone should have a Jo Spencer in their lives.

What’s one thing you must have/do in the morning?
Coffee. Coffee. Did I say coffee? I’m not a morning person at ALL. I’m not grumpy before my morning caffeine, just incoherent.

What are the names of your pets?
I’m a dog lover. I have a Cairn terrier/Westie mix named Missy and a Pit Bull/Shepherd cross named Sadie. I also have three grand-puppies. My middle daughter has a purebred Chihuahua named Paris and a purebred teacup Yorkie named Jack-Jack. My youngest daughter has a Chihuahua mix (and I do mean mix—sometimes I think of different animals, not just dog breeds) named Mea. Youngest was planning to get a boy dog and name him Romeo, but she fell in love with a female and named her “Romea.” Mea for short.

Her One and Only
by Becky Wade

Published: May 3, 2016
From: Bethany House
Purchase: Her One and Only

When NFL super star Gray Fowler is threatened by a stalker, his team hires a professional bodyguard to ensure his safety. But when Gray's "protection" turns out to be a woman half his size, he's indignant. Will Dru Porter--a former Marine and expert markswoman--prove herself worthy of the job? And meanwhile, who's going to guard Gray's heart?

Get to know Becky...

If you're main character celebrated Halloween, what would they dress up as?
Dru Porter from Her One and Only is fierce! The hero, Gray Porter, often likens her to a comic book super hero. Thus, I think Dru would dress as Cat Woman for Halloween. She'd feel completely at home in the black leather outfit and high heels.

Which of your characters do you secretly have a crush on?
Every hero I've ever written. Not only does the heroine get to fall in love and win the hero over the course of a romance novel, but so does the WRITER and so does the READER. That's why I so enjoy writing and reading love stories! I'm enamored of the heroes. Ah, the heroes.

If I had a knife I'd carve our initials into a tree. It would look something like, BW + MJ + BP + TP + JP + JB + WM + GF.

What are the names of your pets?
My dog is named Sam. He's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He snores, gazes at everyone with bulgy-eyed adoration, has a super mellow vibe, gobbles up his daily portion of food in under a minute, rides along for carpool, is a champion cuddler, and keeps me company when I'm writing. Here's a picture of him joining hand-to-paw with my youngest daughter to say grace before dinner.

Thanks for hosting me at Thinking Thoughts, Emilie! I truly appreciate it.

ACFW Recap (part 2)

The monument

As I said in my previous post, I attended the ACFW Conference in Indianapolis last weekend. I had the privileged of meeting so many amazing authors and writers - some published, some on their way. It was such a blessing to spend time with hundreds of like-minded people.

As Brandilyn Collins (the MC for the weekend) said, we just had to remember that there were "normals" about. When you get that many authors in one location, we tend to be a little lax about the interesting life a writer leads. It's not uncommon to hear writers talking about their characters as if they were real people or even see someone talking to themselves, more than likely arguing, because their character is trying to do something the author hasn't anticipated. Yes, normal people may not understand, but at ACFW there were hundreds of people who would!

View from our hotel room...so beautiful!

I had the personal privileged of rooming with my critique partner Deb, JoAnn (a former {Writer Wednesday} guest), and Laurean. We had so much fun! It's always great to meet people online through the ACFW email loops, but nothing beats being in person. We all shared our experiences at the conference together and there was always lots of laughter in our room!

Deb and I at the airport

It was also such a fantastic thing to talk over new projects and get feedback from Deb. She's such an encouragement to me and being able to chat in person was so great!!

**Shameless plug: check out Deb's books!!!

Tosca and I <3 br="">
In addition to all this writing fun, I also got to have some photo fun too! For those of you who don't know, in addition to creating suspenseful and romantic plots, I also love to photo real-life people too ;) Check out my photo blog if you get the chance: E.A. Creative Photography. You can also find me on Facebook here.

I had the distinct pleasure of taking headshots for many authors and agents in attendance at the conference! Not only was it great to have a bunch of sessions lined up to capture the beautiful natural light and fun setting of Indianapolis, but I got to meet some amazing people! I met multi-published authors, aspiring authors, agents, and even New York Times Bestselling Author Tosca Lee (pictured at the right). As I like to say, I kind of have a bit of an author crush on Tosca and it was such a fun opportunity to share my passion for photography with her. She is such a beautiful person and a fantastic author :)

Hayley and I

THEN - as if that wasn't enough - I got to spend a night on the town with my dear friend Hayley! She attends college in Indianapolis and we were able to spend some time hanging out, sight seeing, having dinner, and catching up on life!
The monument at night
Beautiful fountain by the monument lit up at night!
Capital seen from the monument
Love the lights :D
Well...there you have it. A snapshot of my time at ACFW. In between the photo fun/craziness, I also attended sessions, met with some wonderful agents and mentors, and tried my best to soak it all up. I've come to see that this is definitely a direction the Lord is taking me in. I don't know yet what that will look like or just how He is going to direct my steps, but I have confidence in His plans.

It's interesting...one last thing I'd like to share is just more of a feeling than anything else.  I don't know if you've experienced something like this, but the whole time I was in Indianapolis, I had the overwhelming feeling of being exactly where I needed to be. I was a peace. Sure, I was nervous as anything to meet with agents and to "pitch" my book or even just to talk about those things, but the whole time I never once doubted my presence at the conference. I know the Lord prompted me to sign up to go (even when I wasn't sure how I'd pay for it) and I know that He sustained me while I was there. To sum it all up, the Lord taught me (again) how good and trustworthy He is. What a blessing!

For anyone who attended ACFW - what's one thing you walked away with (writing or spiritual or both)? I'd love to hear from you!

RE:View Friday | A Variety

I've been a busy reading like crazy when I'm not working on photos or my next book... It's always a difficult balance to keep as a writer. You need to be writing, but you also need to be reading!

If you're a writer, how do you keep the balance? Any creative ways you keep up with your reading and your writing?

I have had the chance to read some great books though, so I thought I'd share them all together today. Maybe this will help you bulk up your 'end of the summer' reading list?

The Soldier's Sweetheart | Deb Kastner

Set in Serendipity, Texas (and part of the Serendipity Sweethearts series from Love Inspired) Samantha Howell is in for a surprise when Will Davenport, recently retired from active duty in the Army, shows up on her doorstep. Samantha is a self-sufficient woman who's used to running her own business while Will is a man with a plan as well as a past he can't seem to get away from.

I really enjoyed reading this novel by my dear friend and critique partner Deb! She paints a vivid picture of small town life in Serendipity, and her characters leap off the page with their real-life struggles and authentic emotions. Will is a hardened Army veteran and Samantha is a woman who wants to take the world on her shoulders. They both must find ways to overcome themselves in order for them to work together against a threat to the quiet way of life in this small town.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who want's to read a sweet love story that portrays genuine characters who overcome real-life problems to find not only love, but a deep reliance on God.

Darkest Hour | Nike Chillemi
--> Set in New York in 1948, Darkest Hour follows the story of Hank Jansen, the Nassau County’s medical examiner and working single mom, Lucinda Bryne, on a search for the truth about the death of Lucinda’s employer, Doctor McCloud. Hank takes an unusual interest in the case when Lucinda is unjustly accused and he gets to know her loving family and adorable son.

As I was reading this novel, my mind immediately filled in the blanks with the film noir feeling. I could see the locations clearly and the factual details, time-period specific, were helpful to picture the rest. Being a fan of the 40s, I enjoyed these details, which really enhanced the story.

It did take me a bit to get into the story initially, but I believe the style is best suited to this genre and time period. It has a drier feeling, more factual and straight forward, like watching a crime show from the 1940s. I was satisfied with the ending though there were a few times when I felt like the details were a little contrived or too coincidental to be realistic. It didn’t take away from the overall story too much though.

In all, if you enjoy crime fiction, especially historical and from this time period, I think you would enjoy reading this. I hadn’t read any of Nike’s other novels, so you won’t be at a disadvantage to understand/enjoy this novel.

The Nun and the Narc | Catherine Castle

-->Sister Margret Mary O’Connor is not your typical nun. In the style of The Sound of Music, we follow Sister Margret as she embarks on an adventure in Mexico that will end up changing not only her life, but that of Jed Barringer. Jed, part of the DEA in Texas, is following a lead on a drug cartel when Sister Margret butts in, putting not only herself but Jed in danger, too.
I loved following the relationship between Sister Margret and special agent Jed. It’s an intriguing idea to have a nun who is placed in a situation where she is challenged – both literally and spiritually. I will say that, as you may expect, the novel has Catholic undertones due to the fact that Margaret is a novace (or, a nun in training). Obviously, this is not a bad thing at all, it is just a part of the novel I wanted to point out.

I would definitely recommend this novel by Catherine! It reminded me, just a little bit, of a MacGuyver story (one of my favorite television shows) not that it was gadget oriented, but in that it had that type of feeling. It was a fun read!

The Real Deal on Love and Men |  Michelle Mckinney Hammond

So what is the “Real Deal” on men and dating? I think that Michelle puts forth a comprehensive explanation of all things related to men, dating, relationships, and marriage. She doesn’t avoid any topics and approaches each of them head on with bold enthusiasm. I found her approach to dating refreshing – she explains that it is not for “mating” but for “fact finding”. It’s used as a way to find out if you’ll have a lasting relationship with someone. She also addresses online dating, expectations in relationships, setting boundaries, and even divorce.

Another thing that I appreciate about this book is that Michelle includes letters she’s received from women from all over and then her response to those issues. It is always helpful to hear from other women who have the same (or similar) issues as you do. I found a lot of her responses to be helpful and straightforward.

On a note of caution, I would say that I “heard” Michelle emphasizing a lot about self. There were a few times I interpreted what she was saying as “rely on you to change things”. She did emphasize the Lord’s role in it, but there was a lot of focus on getting the “life you want”. As I said in my post about self, I don’t think it’s about us getting anything. I don’t think it’s about us at all. Sure, it would be great to “get” a husband, but that’s not the ultimate goal, Christ is.

With these slight reservations, I’d definitely recommend this book (coming out September 1st)! I think her practical applications and the wide range of subjects that are portrayed definitely make this a good resource. As you’d do with any book you’d turn to for advice, read with caution and discernment always turning back to the Bible for the final word on anything.

ACFW Writers Conference

I am so excited!

I get to attend the American Christian Fiction Writers conference this September! When I first heard of the conference, shortly after joining ACFW, I thought to myself, "It would be great to go, but I probably can't." Now, looking back, I had no idea all that the Lord would do in order to bring me to the point where I am attending!

I will only share bits and pieces here, because it's quite a long story, but I just love seeing the Lord's hand in things! I think that is part of the reason why I write--to share how God can (and does) work though our lives.

You see, I have been blessed to partner up with a fabulous critique partner on my latest novel. Her name is Deb and you should definitely check out her books! I honestly believe the Lord planned for Deb to see my post in search of a critique partner and prompted her to reply because I know she has already helped my writing tremendously in the short time we've been working together! (Seriously, check out her books!)

I received word an editor wanted to see my manuscript [post about this here]. I thought to myself, "Okay, Lord, what does that mean?" It meant I needed to work my tail off! I still am, and am exited to say I'm almost done with my novel! Little did I realize that it was in preparation for more than just a pitch to an editor. In talking with Deb, I realized that if I really wanted to be serious about my writing, I was going to have to consider getting an agent.

Dun, dun, dun....

Suddenly, I was that wide-eyed little girl back in grade school wanting to grow up to be an author but having no idea what that meant. Sure, it is fun to write books, but to sell them to publishing houses and be a part of the elite group of men and women who entertain and delight readers all over the world through the written word...well, that's another story.

Enter in the ACFW conference. I am blessed to say that God has worked out the details for me to attend and, while I hadn't anticipated attending, I know I am more excited than I would have imagined. I hope to make amazing friends, learn a lot, and hopefully meet with an agent or two in hopes of continuing down the road to publication. Thankfully, I've been motivated to complete my manuscript (which is pretty much a necessity as an unpublished author to attain an agent) and hope to be ready to take the next steps in my writing career.

Through all of this I am reminded of one very important fact.

I write as an outpouring to God.

I fully believe we are all given gifts and talents by the Creator and we are meant to use them. I desire to use my gift for writing for Him and His glory - not for myself (1 Cor. 10:31). I know it's easy to get wrapped up in myself, but I sit at my keyboard today and pray fervently that everything and anything I do will only act to bring Him more glory.

Thanks to all of you who faithfully read Thinking Thoughts and who encourage me in my writing endeavors. Yes, I may talk in word counts and character motivation, but I hope to someday soon be able to hand you a book and say, "I wrote this for you--to inspire, encourage, and entertain!"
