Redefining Romance by Kariss Lynch | Guest Post

I am so excited to host my friend Kariss today. We're almost out of February - the "month of love" - but she's got some really valid points on what romance and love really is and how we may have lost the reality of it in what we are reading. We'd both love to know your thoughts below!
_________________

Up until a few years ago, I would have described myself as a closest romantic. Then I had this book come out that my publisher called “romance,” and I could no longer hide. The secret was out. I was a huge romantic. Even as my second and third book released, I continued to struggle with this label until I finally realized why I was wrestling. I didn’t want to identify with romance as culture defines it. We’ve messed it up. Instead, I wanted to redeem the definition.

Romance as God paints it in scripture is something that is strong and steady. It pursues, it asserts, it is something beautiful. Basically, romance is near and dear to the heart of God because He is the embodiment of love. But we have desperately messed it up. Over the past few years, I set out to read more outside the Christian genre. I wanted to see what others called romance. I’ve made a few observations, particularly from my reading of Young Adult Contemporary Romance and Young Adult Fantasy (both genres that I LOVE).

Kariss Lynch | Author Chat

It's about time for some iced drinks, don't you think? But...maybe one more latte for me. Grab your favorite drinks and take a seat. It's time for an author chat with my friend, the lovely Kariss Lynch!

Kariss Lynch writes contemporary romance about characters with big dreams, adventurous hearts, and enduring hope. She is the author of the Heart of a Warrior series and loves to encourage her readers to have courage. In her free time, she hangs out with her family and friends, explores the great outdoors, and tries not to plot five stories at once.

Let's get real...

Would you rather go to the future or go to the past?
As much as I would love to know my future, I think it would take some of the awe out of the journey. Besides, why not go back and watch Michaelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel, or meet some of my ancestors, or have tea with Winston Churchill? I would love to stroll through history.

What’s one thing you must have/do in the morning?
Coffee. It’s become a problem really. I was anti-coffee until about five years ago. I had just signed a book contract, was working a full-time job seven days a week during a busy season, editing Shaken in the evenings, and writing Shadowed. Coffee became a staple. Now it is a necessity. I’m not quite ready to enter a recovery program for this particular addiction.

@createexploreread
If you were a superhero, what would be your super power?
If I were a superhero, I would want to be able to snap my fingers and appear wherever I was needed whenever I needed to get there. This would also come in handy if I happened to be craving pizza from Italy. Who needs a passport then?

Name three places you’d like to travel to & why?
I just got back from Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, and the travel bug is alive and well! I would love to visit Iceland. I’ve had several friends go and love it. The Northern Lights are on my bucket list, especially since I am a night owl, and they just sound magical.

Next up would be Greece. I am a huge ocean girl, and I love the Mediterranean. I would love to go for a month, spend time with the people, in the culture, and enjoy the beautiful blue of the ocean.

I’ve been to Scotland, but I want to go back and watch the Highland Games and maybe even go visit the castle that served as a base for a lot of the Harry Potter films.

If you were stranded on an island what are three things you couldn’t live without?

1. A fully loaded kindle with a forever-lasting battery stocked with hundreds of books, including all my favorites.
2. A tent so I always have shelter.
3. A suitcase of clothes, because this seems practical.
Name one song/artist you're embarrassed you like.
I love One Direction. I have all their albums and know most of their songs.

Which of your characters do you secretly have a crush on?

I definitely have a crush on Micah Richards, which is a HUGE reason why I chose to give him his own book, which I am currently working to finish. He’s a Navy SEAL, tall, dark, and handsome, with a wicked sense of humor, and a gorgeous grin. Plus he is protective, loves his family, and loves Jesus. Unfortunately, he’s going to be a little broken when we meet him next. But don’t worry, I have full confidence that a girl I have in mind is going to remind him of the strength that he has and the protector and warrior he still can be.

If you could live in a fantasy world, who’s would it be?
Hello, Hogwarts, where’s my letter? I love J.K. Rowling’s world because it is familiar yet magical and mysterious. Hand me a wand, give me a house (Gryffindor, please), and turn me loose!

Kariss Lynch | Spread the Christmas Joy

Ice Walkers

Every other Christmas, I walk on water.

Snow piles up around the orange adobe motel in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Prints from wolves and deer dot the fresh powder. The Brandon cousins arrive en masse and add boot prints of varying sizes from the college grads to the smallest toddlers, delighting to ruffle the almost untouched snow. We trek down to the river, a frozen, twisting snake that winds behind the hotel and through the countryside for miles. Hunter, the youngest by far, struggles to lift his little legs, chunky boots and all, and place them right in the footprints left by the big boys walking just ahead.

We have a system; one established when the first Brandon grandchildren braved the icy river back in 1994. The fearless older boys of the clan tentatively lead the way. A booted foot tests the frozen mass, and eyes judge the color and texture of the ice. We form a human chain and proceed hand-in-hand onto nature’s skating rink, choosing to go right to the cow pond or left toward rapids. When one falls through into the shallow water, the rest scramble to rescue that cousin. Falling in is inevitable and soaked feet a reality. Every year, a new cousin rising to maturity learns the rules of ice walking, marking their initiation in our family tradition.

We gather to celebrate Christmas in this snowy mountain town – doting grandparents, four daughters, and their families. Our heritage of faith dates back generations to the time Nanny and Popoo sang hymns and toted an old organ to their tiny church on the plains of West Texas. Just like we teach little Hunter and those before him how to walk on water, we must teach him what Christmas is truly about, a tradition deeper than the river we love to explore. After a day of walking on water, the lesson is easy to teach.

Hunter crawled into my lap the first Christmas morning he was able to walk on water. The smell of turkey and pie tickled our noses, and the noise of our family filled the air. We giggled about our day on the river while he pleaded to go explore, eager to don his floppy hat and ski bib. And then we talked about the baby of Christmas, the water-walking man.

My cousins don’t struggle to understand becoming part of a family with a Father who loves them. They relate to Him. He’s the One who created the river they walk on and placed them in the family who links arms with them and says, “I won’t let go.”

But unlike the unreliability of their older cousins, the young ones understand that Jesus won’t let them down. His grip won’t slip, and He won’t ever fall in. Even when the ice cracks, their booted foot sinks, and their feet and legs soak with icy water, the baby of Christmas, the water-walking Son of God never lets them go.

Author Interview | Kariss Lynch

You and Writing

Tell us a little bit about yourself: How did you start writing? What has kept you writing?
...I started writing in third grade with the story of an imaginary world and fairies named after my friends. I had to ask my teacher for more paper. I think she eventually had to give me a limit. I just couldn’t stop! The story had more to say! I kept writing in classes and wrote poetry for myself. I loved every challenge my teachers and professors threw my way. If I could try a different style or genre, I attempted it with gusto. I wanted to grow and get better, but I had a fear of sharing those stories with others. My family and a mentor finally challenged me to step out. I started with a blog and then pursued publication. Book three is currently in the editing process. My dreams never felt this good.

Do you have a favorite book or work that you’ve written? If so, why?
...I think whatever I am currently working on is my favorite. I just finished Surrendered, which will hit shelves in Winter 2016. It is the final chapter in Nick and Kaylan’s love story, though we might hear about their lives in books to come. As I explored their relationship, I had to take a hard look at what love looks like, not what culture says it is, but what the Lord says it is. I was lost in this scene as Kaylan is questioning her relationship with Nick. As I finished, I felt this heavy weight on my chest. The way I had written Nick – this Navy SEAL, a warrior, a flawed guy striving to be like Jesus – I realized the way he loves Kaylan and pursues her and the way Jesus loves me and pursues me, even when and especially when I’m unlovable. I can’t wait to share that story with readers.

Your Writing

Tell us a little bit about your book. Why did you write it?
...Nick and Kaylan return in Shadowed as Nick faces the demons of his past on a mission to catch Janus, and Kaylan comes to terms with loving a man who leaves.

...Now in California, Kaylan slowly adjusts to life in the SEAL community with new friends, new neighbors, an internship, and mysterious and threatening notes left by a ghost. When items begin to disappear from her home, Kaylan wonders if she will ever find her place in her new reality and wrestles to develop the strength for the life she desires to have with Nick.

...Nick never dreamed his work would follow him home, but now the very terrorist he stalked is threatening everything he holds dear. Nick must learn to trust God with Kaylan’s life as he and his team fight for justice and answers to his past.

...In Shaken, the characters must learn to heal. In Shadowed, they must learn to love. But will their love forever be stalked by shadows? I think readers will love meeting some of Nick’s SEAL buddies and seeing what really makes the heart of a warrior strong.

Do you have a favorite character in this work? If so, why?
...I do. I hate admitting that. They feel like my kids and it feels wrong having a favorite, but I think Logan and his little girl Molly are some of my favorite characters. Logan is a SEAL and a father and husband who just exudes confidence, leadership, and Jesus, and he knows how to have fun! I feel like he is such a voice of wisdom in the book. I know I learned a lot writing him. Molly is just sunshine and innocence. She is a sweet four-year-old who has a curious, innocent, beautiful outlook on the world, and I loved watching her shine and love those around her.

What is one take-away from your book that you hope readers identify with?
...Love is a choice. It’s never easy, but it’s always worth it.

Writing

Where do you find inspiration for your story/characters? Are they based on real life or pure imagination or both?
...My stories and characters are based on the crazy mess in my head and inspiration I see in the world around me. If I see quirks and personality traits in friends, family, or even strangers that fascinate or entice me, I create a character with those traits. In Shaken, Sarah Beth is loosely based on one of my best friends who has the most bubbly personality paired with curly blonde hair and a smile that lights up a room. You can’t help but love her. I chose Kaylan’s passion for helping people and her pursuit of dietetics because of my cousin who has a heart for helping people in third world countries use what they have around them to be healthy and learn how to feed their children. Beware! If you are in my vicinity, anything you say or do is free game for a book.

When you write, what is your overall intention with your stories?
...I think stories should entertain and take you to another place. They have been my escape and my place to dream over the years. But I want my stories to also inspire readers to dream big, have courage, and make a difference. God made you uniquely, and I want readers to find in characters the traits and actions they love and then dare to emulate those things in real life. To use the name of my current series, I want readers to have the heart of a warrior!

What advice would you give to aspiring authors for writing and/or publishing?
...You are never too young or too old to write. You have something to say and a story to tell. The key is figuring out how to do that well. When you write, close the door to what everyone else may think or say and get the story on the page. Know your audience, know what they like, and then just write without fear. That’s the second most important thing I can tell you: write without fear. The most important thing I can tell you is to trust the Lord with the journey.

You

What is a favorite memory you have of your mother?
...We were on family vacation one summer. My brother, sister, and I were in the pool and mom walked down from the condo. She didn’t like to swim, but she loved to come sit on the side of the pool and dip her feet in the water. She sat down on the side, lifted her feet up, and said, “Do you like my pretty toted paint nails?” I think the three of us burst out laughing as she immediately corrected herself. “Pretty painted toe nails, pretty painted toe nails.” We bought her house shoes that looked like furry feet with painted toenails for Christmas, and the joke and memory have never died.

If you had to choose one type of food, what kind would it be?
...Unfortunately, I have cravings for Italian food quite often. I love the flavors, pastas, bread, and salads. So bad for me, but oh so good.

April showers bring May flowers – or so they say. Do you have a favorite flower? If so, why is it your favorite?
...I love lilies and roses. There is something classy and beautiful, yet simple about both.

Probably my favorite quote from today's interview is, "When you write, close the door to what everyone else may think or say and get the story on the page." Amen! Get to know Kariss...

What actor/actress would play you if your life was a movie? If I had to pick an actress to portray my life in a move, hands down I would want Katie Holmes. I think she is gorgeous, classy, and a little mysterious. I’m not too sure if we are similar there, but I would be flattered. Besides, she already mastered the book worm, studious, spunky character in Dawson’s Creek way back in the day, so it might be right in her wheelhouse.

Name one song/artist you're embarrassed you like.
I am soooo embarrassed, but I love One Direction…I can’t help it. They are this generation’s N Sync. I love their sound and some of their songs just make me smile (although I can’t endorse all their lyric choices). I could listen to “Little Things” on repeat. But let’s keep that between us.

Which of your characters do you secretly have a crush on?
Originally, I would have said my main character, Nick Carmichael. I still think he is great, however, I just finished the third and final book in the Heart of a Warrior series, and I may or may not be pretty obsessed with Micah Richards – tall, dark, and handsome, joker, family man, protective. Aka pretty dreamy.

Get to know Annslee...

Favorite place you’ve traveled to?
Italy! It part of my roots, so I guess that makes it even more special. But, there is something about the quaintness of the country that draws me back. I love the warmth of the culture, the friendly, helpful people and of course, the food! Not to mention there is beauty everywhere. From the northern mountainous region to the exquisite architecture from coast to coast to breathtaking Sicily. So rich in history to boot!

Favorite dessert?
That’s a tough one, because I love dessert! But, I think if I had to pick just one, it would be hot fudge sundae. Rich fudge and ice cream ~ a perfect combination. I also have a recipe for hot fudge sundae cake ~ equally delicious!

If you were stranded on an island what are three things you couldn’t live without?
Blow dryer: in humid tropical weather my thick hair would never dry, so a blow dryer is a must. Tweezers ~ a girl has to keep her brows under control J and my Bible, where would I be without an encouraging word? :)
