The Things We Knew by Catherine West | RE:View

Deep family ties, past secrets, and a house that brings them all together--The Things We Knew shows how one family's struggle becomes their saving grace.

Per usual, I didn't read the description of this book before I jumped in to read it. I've read several of Catherine West's books before and was eager to see what this new one would be about. I know from her other books that she isn't afraid to tackle the "real" things in life--that is to say, the hard things. The Things We Knew was in keeping with that, which is something I really appreciate about her writing. It's not dark by any means, just real and always infused with hope.

Lynette Carlisle was an interesting character to me. Seemingly the most innocent of the whole family, the weight of caring for her elderly father rests mainly on her shoulders. She's smart and talented but crippled by responsibility. Then there was Nick Cooper *sigh*. I liked his character a lot, though I would have liked to see even more of his past. Things were alluded to that made me think there's a lot more going on to him that even we know, and I'm not just talking about the mystery.

Speaking of mystery, I appreciated the light touches of a mysterious past and secrets kept. I do feel as if the secrets were not quite as "big" as I wanted them to be and that the characters seemed to hold things back for no apparent reason. I would have like to have even more mystery present, then again I like suspense so that's probably why (ha!).

One final character mention: Gray Carlisle. I just loved his character. Actually, part of me was hoping we would never find out about his past so that he could have his own book *grins*...but I digress.

When I finally had the time to sit down and finish this lovely book (moving is stressful, people) I was drawn in by the light touches of mystery, the sweet romance, and the haunting questions of what would happen. Not sure if there's a plan for a second book, but I could totally see the opening for one. Or maybe a novella about Gray? *grins*

I'd recommend this to those who enjoy women's fiction, romance, and light mystery.

My rating: 4*

Book Description
(from Amazon)
When their tragic past begins to resurface, can he help her remember the things she can’t?

After her mother’s death twelve years ago, Lynette Carlisle watched her close-knit family unravel. One by one, her four older siblings left their Nantucket home and never returned. All seem to blame their father for their mother’s death, but nobody will talk about that tragic day. And Lynette’s memory only speaks through nightmares.

Then Nicholas Cooper returns to Nantucket, bringing the past with him. Once Lynette’s adolescent crush, Nick knows more about her mother’s death than he lets on. The truth could tear apart his own family—and destroy his fragile friendship with Lynette, the woman he no longer thinks of as a kid sister.

As their father’s failing health and financial concerns bring the Carlisle siblings home, secrets surface that will either restore their shattered relationships or separate the siblings forever. But pulling up anchor on the past propels them into the perfect storm, powerful enough to make them question their faith, their willingness to forgive, and the very truth of all the things they thought they knew.

Favorite season?
Even though I live on an island, I have to say my favorite season is Fall. We lived seven years in Canada, and I absolutely love that feeling when the weather begins to change and the air holds a nip, first fires, apple picking, and the changing leaves. It also ushers in the start of the holiday season, which I love. :-)

Who is your favorite secondary character?
In The Things We Knew, I have to pick Gray Carlisle. He’s so broken, he’s really messed up his life, yet there’s just something loveable about him, and you want to see him redeemed somehow. Of course you’ll have to read the book to find out what happens!

What’s your favorite book?
Gone With The Wind. I read the entire thing when I was thirteen, sitting in a very old and drafty library of my boarding school in the south of England. It was my first adventure into romance, and I think I caught the bug. :-) They showed the movie that term as well, and I was completely entranced. It’s one of my favorites and I watch it at least once a year!

Kate Walker used to believe in true love and happily ever after. While her own love life may have left her brokenhearted, it hasn't kept her from churning out made-for-TV romance movie screenplays...until a major career slump and a longing to do something meaningful send her running back to her hometown of Maple Valley.

Permanently sidelined by an injury, former NFL quarterback Colton Greene is temporarily hiding out in a friend's hometown to avoid the media and the reminders of all he's lost. Maple Valley seems like the perfect place to learn how to adjust to normal life. The only trouble is he's never really done normal before.

While Kate plays things safe and Colton is all about big risks and grand gestures, they both get what it's like to desperately need direction in life. An unexpected project gives them both a chance to jumpstart their new lives, but old wounds and new dreams are hard to ignore. Starting over wasn't part of the plan, but could it be the best thing that's ever happened to them?

What actor/actress would play you if your life was a movie?
Does it have to be a current actress? Because if not, my answer is so, SOOOO Katherine Hepburn. She’s my hero and my very favorite actress. Although, ooh, Jean Arthur would also probably play me to a “T.”

If it needs to be someone like, you know, alive then I’d probably say Tina Fey.

Do you have a nickname? Care to share?
I have had the most random collection of nicknames throughout my life. Everything from MC Tagger (which makes no sense because my middle name doesn’t even start with a C) to Milbo Taggins. But the two that stuck the longest are: Sparky (referring to an unfortunate fire I started my first month working at my job) and May (as in, Maytag).

Which of your characters do you secretly have a crush on?
What does it say about me if I admit to secretly (or perhaps not so secretly) having crushes on ALL of them? Haha! I think Matthew Knox from my first book, MADE TO LAST, will always have a special spot in my heart simply because he was my first hero and has basically every quality I appreciate in the real life men I know. However, probably the one I’ve had the biggest crush on is my newest hero, Logan Walker. People won’t meet him until 2016 when my second Walker Family book releases. He’s a former reporter/current speechwriter and he’s just, ahhh, my heart. Interestingly, the hero in my upcoming release, Colton Greene, was the hardest for me to connect with as I wrote but I’ll never forget the night I finally figured him out and cried my way through his last scene.

Two lives taken down different roads - one enduring love - one shot at starting over.
If only they believed in second chances.

Julia Connelly is finally free from twelve long years in an abusive relationship. Now able to live the life she’s longed for, Julia takes her two children back home to Vermont, hoping for peace and healing. The last person she expects to see is the man she eloped with at eighteen—who then abandoned her two months into their marriage, with little explanation.

When an assignment in the Middle East ends in tragedy, popular news correspondent, Reid Wallace, returns to his hometown seeking answers and peace of mind.

Confronting his past was not in the plan.

Now he’s asking different questions. Like why the only woman he’s ever really loved still mesmerizes him. Why the haunted expression she wears reaches right into his soul.

And why her twelve year-old son looks just like him.

They say you can’t go home again. Sometimes you don’t have a choice.

What are the names of your pets? If you don't have any, what would you name your pets?
I have a Border Collie and he is called Noah. I’ve always liked the name Teagan for a dog as well, so if we get another at some point, I might pick that!

Favorite place you’ve traveled to?
I absolutely adore California. We’ve visited several times and I think it’s an amazing state, with so much to see and so much variety in one place.

Which of your characters do you secretly have a crush on?
LOL. Great question! :) Hands down, I have to say Luke Maddox from Yesterday’s Tomorrow. Because who wouldn’t?

Yesterday's Tomorrow by Catherine West | RE:View

Hot and humid. Danger at every corner. It's the perfect setting for intrigue and romance.

Kristin Taylor arrives in Vietnam in 1967 to write a Pulitzer prize winning story. Following the footsteps of her father, she's bold and unafraid when it comes to discovering the truth. Nothing--and no one--can get in her way.

Until she meets Luke Maddox, a photographer haunted by his past. Kristin is convinced there's more to Luke than meets the eye, but his defenses are up and his heart, guarded.

Amid the torment and horror of war, two lives are brought together. The decisions they face may displace their goals, but could mean a future of happiness neither was expecting.
***
I thoroughly enjoyed Yesterday's Tomorrow. Kristin's undaunted character and Lukes' brooding humor drew me to their story immediately. I wanted to know what was going to happen and couldn't put the book down until I found out! I also really enjoyed experiencing Vietnam through the character's eyes - feeling the heat, experiencing the smells, connecting with the children in the orphanage.

On another note, there was a tone of realness that I loved about this book. Catherine didn't sugar coat things, but also wasn't out to drag her reader's heart down either. I believe she found a delicate balance that aided her story.

Brilliant photographer Luke Maddox, silent and brooding, exudes mystery. Kristin is convinced he’s hiding something. Willing to risk it all for what they believe in, Kristin and Luke engage in their own tumultuous battle until, in an unexpected twist, they’re forced to work together. RE:View | Monday? Hidden In the Heart by Catherine West

I'm not sure how this happened... but I was going to post a review of Catherine West's novel Hidden in the Heart on Friday and look at that... no post! Needless to say (because I think it's quite obvious) I've been extremely busy - these will sounds curiously like excuses *cough*becausetheyare*cough* but I had three photo shoots this weekend not to mention I was house sitting and attempting to keep many other commitments as I prepare for this weekends women's conference.

Anyway... I decided rather than wait I'd just post her review today (hence the question mark after Monday in the title).  It's a little out of the ordinary but that's because I have a review of Harry Wegley's thrilling novel Hide and Seek coming up this Friday - this one I promise to post on the actual day :)

Hidden in the Heart

In the middle of many struggles, Claire Ferguson just wants the truth. She's suffered the loss of her mother, a miscarriage, resulting difficulty in her marriage due to her escape into medication and alcohol, and now the haunting possibility she has a genetic disease the caused the miscarriage. The only way to alleviate her fears is to find her mother - that is, her birth mother.

Claire is adopted.

This story is one of struggle and fighting for the truth. Claire's journey to find her birth mother isn't an easy one, coming with a high cost, but in her mind it's a price that must be paid in exchange for answers.

Don't worry though - it's not all depression and sadness, Catherine does a great job of giving the reader only what they can handle in exchange for a story that will draw you into the characters lives and personal stories. The natural intrigue that comes with not having answers is woven throughout this story and will keep you searching for the entire truth - not just one persons version of it.

I really enjoyed this book!  As someone who want's to adopt some day, Claire's perspective is very eye-opening. I'd highly recommend this to anyone interested in adoption, but also to anyone who enjoys reading true-to-life stories that draw you in and allow you to truly connect with the characters. Once you start this novel, you'll soon find yourself identifying with Claire and wanting to know the truth yourself.

Purchase Hidden in the Heart {here} and connect with Catherine {here}.
