Raging Storm by Vannetta Chapman | Quotes

Welcome author Vannetta Chapman to the blog today, friends. She's going to share some quotes from her new release, Raging Storm. See the book description below and find out more about Vannetta at the bottom of the post.

Raging Storm
by Vannetta Chapman

In the Darkness,

Anarchy Awakens

When a massive solar flare wiped out all modern technology across the globe, the small town of Abney, Texas, was thrown into chaos. Shelby Sparks and her teenage son, Carter, have found refuge, but Shelby knows she can't simply remain hidden forever. Carter is a type 1 diabetic in need of insulin—and Shelby will risk her life traveling to Austin to make sure he gets it.

Shelby's best friend and high school sweetheart, Max Berkman, won't even consider letting her make the perilous journey alone. Together, they manage to get to the capital—only to discover that while things are desperate in Abney, Austin has turned into an urban nightmare on the brink of anarchy.

Shelby and Max's search for medical supplies will lead them into terrifying territory, where the only thing more uncertain than finding what they need is the hope of making it out of the city alive.

In this second book in an eerily plausible, action-packed dystopian series, survival will be threatened and faith will be put to the ultimate test as a raging storm engulfs America.

Thank you so much for having me on your blog. I’m thrilled to talk to you today about my newest release, Raging Storm. This is the 2nd book in my Remnant series. It’s a story about a world where most technology has been destroyed by a massive solar flare, and how a small group of friends from Abney Texas learn to survive.

I’d like to share with you a couple of quotes from the story.
They found a room that had been set up with tables and chairs. Several lanterns sat darkened on the middle of the tables. Shelby glanced at her watch—it was only ten o’clock, but the room was empty. Everyone was in bed. Funny how their sleeping patterns had reverted back to a farmer’s lifestyle. They were up at sunrise and asleep by the time it was good and dark. No more late nights scouring the Internet, watching television, or reading one more chapter. She was reminded again that life had changed, and they had changed with it. Surviving took every ounce of energy they had.
There’s so much in this excerpt that I like. People’s lives have fallen into a natural rhythm again. I imagine much of our problems with insomnia would be gone, because we’d be physically exhausted from a day of labor. Plus we wouldn’t have the technological noise that has become a constant background to our lives. I enjoy many of these things as much as anyone--social media, digital music, an endless supply of movies at my fingertips--but I do wonder if perhaps these things have come at a great price. At the end of this excerpt, Shelby realizes that life has changed. That they are stronger than they’ve ever been.
He leaned in toward her, his hand tracing the outline of her jaw, his lips finding hers. Softly, gently, he kissed her.
She pulled away first, laughing nervously. “That didn’t settle me down.”
So he reached for her hand and pulled it between his. “Your hands are always so cold.”
“Low blood pressure.”
“Even as the world is ending.”
“Even then.”
“You were so happy just a few hours ago. What happened?”
“Fear crept in.”
This short romantic scene between Max and Shelby makes me laugh. I can see it in my mind. Shelby has held her emotions at bay for a long, long time. She loves Max, but she’s afraid to admit that--afraid of being hurt, afraid of being abandoned, afraid. Her emotions somersault between joy and fear. Max sees it, and Shelby finally acknowledges it, and that’s a turning point for her. Because she begins to understand that fearful is not what we’re called to be. As Christians, our trust is in the Lord, and so we can afford to be bold in our faith and in our relationships.

She saved Max for last. When she moved to slap his hand, he pulled her into his arms and whispered in her ear. “Carter’s going to be fine, and he’s lucky to have you for his mother.”
She touched his cheek once and started to answer. Changing her mind, she kissed him on the other cheek and whispered “thank you” before pulling away.
Something inside of Max blossomed, something he hadn’t felt in a long time. Certainly not since the flare, and maybe even before that. Maybe it was something he’d smothered well before the sun changed their world.
For the first time in many years, Max experienced hope. That they would get the supplies of medication back to the people who needed them and that Carter would be fine. He caught a glimpse of a future with Shelby, one that was more than friendship. He allowed himself to dream about the next day and the next one after that with Shelby in his arms, by his side, completing his life. And in that moment the thought crossed his mind that just possibly the life they were building could be better than the one they’d left behind.

And there is another theme of the book, that sometimes the things we fear, the things we would never wish for, give us joy that we couldn’t imagine. No one in this story would have wished for a solar flare, to lose all modern conveniences, to be thrown back into the lifestyle of their grandparents. But once these things happen, they find joy. They find hope in the future that God has planned. “The life they were building could be better than the one they’d left behind.” I think this is a truth for each of us, because God’s grace is always sufficient.

Sarah's Orphans
by Vannetta Chapman

Published: August 30, 2016
Publisher: Harvest House
Purchase: Sarah's Orphans

Sarah Yoder belongs to a Plain community in Oklahoma, but her days are far from simple. Life suddenly gets complicated when a series of tragic events unfold, leaving her in charge of the household.

Alone with her younger siblings, Sarah is exhausted but finally at peace. Then she nearly runs over a small Hispanic boy with her buggy…and somehow finds herself sheltering two more orphans.

Paul Byler moved to Cody’s Creek to help his brother in a time of need. But now that Joseph has recovered from his heart attack, Paul’s ready for a quiet place of his own. The only problem? His new property lands him next door to the orphaned Yoder family—and a calling from God he can’t seem to ignore.

A story of extraordinary grace and love in the face of desperate need, Sarah’s Orphans is the third standalone novel in the Plain and Simple Miracles collection by Vannetta Chapman.

Who is your favorite secondary character?
In Sarah’s Orphans, my favorite secondary character is Mammi, the grandmother who arrives at Sarah’s door and insists that she’s staying as long as they need her. Sarah hasn’t had any dependable adults in her life, and it takes some time before she learns that Mammi’s love is both deep, wide, and dependable.

What’s one thing you must have/do in the morning?
Coffee. I’ve cut it down from 2-3 cups to only 1, but those first few minutes of caffeine are very important. I also MUST take my dogs for a walk every morning before I sit down to work. Cola is 35 pounds and a beagle mix. Phoebe is 100 pounds and a Labrador.

Favorite place you’ve traveled to?
I traveled to England/Wales two years ago and absolutely loved it. A few years before that I was able to go to Ireland. Both trips were awesome…and don’t be surprised if you see some stories come out of the places I visited!

Heroes and Heroines of Dystopian Fiction by Vannetta Chapman | Guest Post

What’s your favorite kind of hero/heroine? Do you envision the hero riding in to save the day on a horse? Or driving a sports car? Is your heroine a woman with a career or a stay at home mom?

My upcoming release, Deep Shadows, is a dystopian story. These are tales centered around a dramatic change in society, major what if scenarios. They are stories about relationships and how they survive or crumble when what we’ve feared, as a society, occurs. They’re stories of faith and hope in the most desperate of times. And the major characters in these stories are a bit different!

Dystopian heroes/heroines:
  1. Are usually “reluctant heroes.” They don’t seek the spotlight and don’t want to be the one in charge. But when things fall apart, they step into the role where they’re needed.
  2.  Have unusual skills. Usually those are survival skills. They know how to find things that you need to survive. They know how to get by without their cell phone, Google, and GPS.
  3. Are loyal. They might not be the strongest or the bravest, but they genuinely care about their family and friends, and they’re willing to do anything to honor their promises.
  4. Are adaptable. In a dystopian world everything is turned upside down. Heroes are able to adjust quickly. Instead of asking “why” they focus on “what we need to do now.” They understand the time to grieve over what’s been lost is later. The thing to do now is to be strong for friends/family/neighbors.
  5. Have an abiding faith. Despite the odds, the bleak turn of events, the seemingly desperate future, heroes and heroines in a Christian dystopian novel believe that God is still in control. Do they struggle? Sure. Do they doubt? Sometimes. But in the end, they lead others not just through a crumbling world but on a journey of faith.

Deep Shadows is the first book in my upcoming Remnant Series. It’s a significant change from the Amish books I’ve previously published, and for me this journey began with a few questions:

Would I know how to survive if the technology I use every day disappeared?

Would I be strong, physically and emotionally, to care for my family?

Would my faith, my belief in God’s care and provide, remain strong?

Deep Shadows is a journey into fast paced, unexpected journey through a world turned topsy-turvy. I hope it’s a journey that you’ll take with me.

But then Luke vanished before graduation and their world--and friendships--crumbled.

Now years later, Griffin has left the police and his friendships behind. Still trying to forget a case that went bad when he was a SWAT team sniper, he's living a quiet life as a park ranger at Gettysburg. Quiet until skeletal remains are uncovered near Little Round Top--and they aren't Civil War-era.

Griffin just wants the case to go away, but charming forensic anthropologist Finley Scott discovers evidence pointing to the work of an expert sniper. When FBI agent Declan Grey steps in to take over the case, past and present collide. Griffin soon realizes he'll need to confront some of the darkest days of his life if he--and those he cares about--are going to escape a downward spiral of crime, danger, and murder.

The Coder & The Fixer
by Celesta Thiessen

February 1, 2016
Indie Published
Purchase: The Coder & The Fixer

Two 700-year-old spaceships, a Jesus-follower, and a killer all need help to survive.

Nidal is the coder on the Faithful. He’s brilliant, ruthless and faithless. For him, it was join the Brotherhood or watch his mother die. Now, as part of the Brotherhood, he has taken down ship after ship. The flagship, carrying the president, is their last target.

Azalea is the fixer on the flagship, Reliance. Her creative genius and her faith have kept them operational and one step ahead of the Brotherhood. But, when the Brotherhood hijacks the ship, Azalea must bind herself to the foreign coder in order to save all that remains of humankind.
Get to know Celesta...

Would you rather go to the future or go to the past?
I think I’d rather go into the future. The past we already know about, it’s history. But the future is undiscovered. I’m interested to see what new inventions and technology there will be in the future.

Unless I went back into the past when Jesus was here on earth. That would be something else. When he looked at me would he know me? Would he know that I was from the future?

Who is your favorite secondary character?
My favorite secondary character in The Coder & The Fixer is Linx. I think we really get to know him and love him over the course of the story. Linx is brilliant, funny and devoted. He’s always there for the main character, Azalea, especially when she needs him most. Linx is a true hero.

If you were a superhero, what would be your super power?
I would love to be a super hero with the gift of ‘glimpse of truth’. When I see someone, I would see their deepest need. I would also see what would fulfill that need. When I would touch someone they’d see a glimpse of truth, for just an instant - they could see the course of action that will lead them to fulfillment. Then that person could chose to ignore that glimpse or to act on it. Hmm…Maybe I should write a story about that?

Thank you for allowing me to visit your blog today. I’m very excited about the release of Joshua’s Mission (2-1-16), which is book 2 in my Plain & Simple Miracles series. I’d like to share with you the “story behind the story” – or what inspired me to write this book.

Emilie here: Happy to have you! Readers, stop by again on Monday for a New Novel News look into Joshua's Mission as well.

Cornerstones of our faith. My husband is probably my biggest critic—which is a good thing. He keeps me on my toes, professionally speaking. He’s also very supportive in every way. One night we were talking about an upcoming proposal that was due to my publisher, and he challenged me to think of a deeper plot line—something that would touch on the cornerstones of our faith. Wow! That sent me back to the drawing board. I started wondering what makes us, as Christians, different from everyone else? Certainly our faith in Christ. But how do we show that?

The answer I came up with was …

1. We believe in miracles. I did a poll on my Facebook page. We had an outstanding response and the vast majority (close to 98%) said they do believe in miracles—not that they always happen when we pray for one, but that God does still intercede in the lives of believers. That idea gave birth to Anna’s Healing, book 1 in this series.

2. We participate in missions. As believers, sometimes we send donations, sometimes we pray, and sometimes we actually go and participate in missions. We don’t do this for an award or because our photo might end up in the paper. We do it because God told us “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” He told us that when we do this to the least of those around us, we do this to Him. This commandment to care for others, led me to write Joshua’s Mission, book 2 in this series.

3. We care for orphans. We’re also commanded to “look after orphans and widows in their distress.” In our society, it’s sometimes easy to overlook those in need and to assume that some governmental agency will take care of them. Sarah’s Orphans, book 3 in this series, addresses the plight of the orphans in our day and age, and how we can make a difference in their lives. This book releases in December of this year.

There are certainly other ways that we live out our faith. Miracles, missions, and orphans are three that stood out to me, and they certainly inspired me to write the three books in the Plain & Simple Miracles series. I hope that you will pick up a copy of Joshua’s Mission and learn about the wonderful work that churches are doing across our nation and abroad to help those in need.

Now it’s your turn. What do you consider to be a cornerstone of our faith? And would you like to see a book written about it? Or would you like to write one yourself? I’d love to hear from you.

If you were a superhero, what would be your super power?
I think I’d like to fly. Then I would never be stuck in traffic again or waiting at an airport. I wouldn’t have to stop and think, “Can I afford that airline ticket?” I could just zip zip zip where ever I wanted to go!

What are you reading right now?
I’m reading Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee. I taught To Kill a Mockingbird to many students throughout the years (I was a high school and college teacher for 15 years), so I was intrigued about this book. I’m about halfway through and so far I love reading more about Scout!

What’s one thing you must have/do in the morning?
Every morning we rise and shine early and walk the dogs. Then we brew a cup of coffee in the Keurig, snag a granola bar, and sit out on the back patio to watch the deer. It’s a WONDERFUL way to start my day.

Author Interview | Vannetta Chapman

You and Writing

Tell us a little bit about yourself: How did you start writing? What has kept you writing?
...I was an English teacher for 15 years (high school and college), and I’ve always been an avid reader. After finishing my MA in English, I began writing articles for Christian magazines—a few years after that I challenged myself to write a novel. It took a few years before I was picked up by an agent, and a publisher, but it’s been a fabulous journey.

Do you have a favorite book or work that you’ve written? If so, why?
...I love the characters in my Shipshewana Amish Mystery series, and I still receive requests to write more of those books.

Your Writing

Tell us a little bit about your book. Why did you write it?
...Hidden is the story of Dana Jacobs—who SEEMS to have it all together, but in fact is held back in her personal and spiritual life by events in her past. Faith is something she stopped having as a small child. Now Ben Marshall is in her life—a steady, calming, faithful presence, and she doesn’t know what to do with him. When they become deeply involved in a case that threatens both their town and their lives, Dana must decide if she’s going to let her past define her. She must decide whether she’s going to live in fear, or live by faith. It’s a fun, suspenseful story that focuses on God’s grace and love for us.

Do you have a favorite character in this work? If so, why?
...I adore Dana—she’s vulnerable but strong. But I’d have to say my favorite character is Ben. He has a strong faith, enthusiasm for life and a real love for others. He’s a fun guy to be around and someone I would want on my side.

What is one take-away from your book that you hope readers identify with?
...That God’s grace can cover all of our hurts, heal our scars, and give us hope.

Writing

Where do you find inspiration for your story/characters? Are they based on real life or pure imagination or both?
...A little of both. Sometimes I’ll read a news article and get an idea for a character or story. Sometimes people I know will inspire me to write about a certain kind of character.

When you write, what is your overall intention with your stories?
...I say that I write “fiction full of grace” and that is my one intention. The book can be in any genre, and it can be in different settings and circumstances. The one guide is that I somehow reveal God’s grace in our lives.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors for writing and/or publishing?
...To keep writing – The 9th book I wrote was the first book published.

You

What will you/did you do for Thanksgiving?
...We have a scattered and blended family, so I’m not sure! I try to keep my plans fluid. I don’t want any of our children to feel pressured by the holidays. The main thing is to be grateful we have one another, whether we get together on that particular day or not.

What is your favorite food of the Thanksgiving dinner?
...Cranberry sauce—I adore it.

What are three things you’re thankful for?
...My family, my church, and my work!
