Beyond Justice by Cara Putman | Re:View

Beyond Justice takes me back to the beauty of Washington, D.C. while sending me on a thrilling mission for justice fraught with twists, turns, and duplicity.

Not only have I had the pleasure of getting to know Cara Putman through her work with ACFW, but I've also had the chance to do her headshots. Let me tell you - she is the sweetest! When I heard about this book I was sooo excited to read it and let me tell you, it delivered.

Hayden McCarthy is a character that I instantly fell in love with. I could easily picture her walking the streets of Arlington after a long day at work just as I could see her seeking out the truth through the justice system. Alternatively, I loved Andrew Wesley's character. He was multi-faceted and I appreciated his perspective juxtaposed with Hayden's.

The stakes of the book are obvious from the beginning and I liked how Cara was able to tie Andrew's work in with Hayden's case. I also appreciated the difference this book represents for the romantic suspense genre. I really enjoyed the fact that neither of their professions are 'typical' for a current romantic suspense. I feel like it was a fresh take on this genre and drew me in immediately.

I would point out that (at times) I felt a little ignorant of our justice system *cringes* and couldn't follow along on all parts. Cara did a great job explaining, but maybe I'm just too far gone to grasp some of the legal ideas and the court system. Still, wherever possible, I felt like she slipped in explanations that were not far fetched in the context of the conversation and made the "technical side" easily readable.

Lastly, the setting. OMG I miss D.C. so much and this book was like taking a walk along the Tidal Basin or seeing the Washington Monument in the sky line. It was beautifully portrayed and I felt like I was back there as I read this.

I'd definitely recommend this to those who like legal and suspense reads. It's not "high octane" action, but there's enough suspense to really grip you. The romance is wonderfully done as well and will really hold you to the end.

By sixth grade, Meghan Carver knew she wanted to write. After earning a degree in English from Millikin University, she detoured to law school, earning a Juris Doctorate from Indiana University. She then worked in immigration law and taught Comp 101 at the local college. Now, she homeschools her six children with her college professor husband. When she isn’t writing, homeschooling, or planning the family’s next travel adventure, she is active in her church, sews for her kidlets, and reads.

Let's get real...

Tell us a little bit about how you started writing:
I first discovered my interest in writing in sixth grade during a school-wide writing challenge. I loved the scratch of the pencil on the paper and the way the edges of the paper curled up as I used every single line. I don’t remember now what I wrote, but I remember scribbling along, thinking, I can do this. My love of writing and reading eventually led me to an English major in college. My writing was put on hold for law school and then six babies, but eventually, I couldn’t repress it any more. Now, I write because I have stories in my mind that need to emerge, because my family enjoys reading what I write and encourages me to keep it up, and because it’s a great stay-at-home-mom job.

Tell us a little bit about your book:

I got the idea for Deadly Disclosure when I was gathering my family’s birth certificates to apply for passports. When I have anything written in my hands, I read it word for word. You can blame my love of reading as well as a legal education for that. J That day, I thoroughly read each birth certificate, and I quickly noticed that there was a huge discrepancy between my date of birth and the date of issue of the birth certificate. I have always known I was adopted, so this didn't surprise me like it surprises my heroine. That difference in the dates is the time it took for my adoption to be finalized and a new birth certificate with the names of my adoptive parents to be issued. As I examined my birth certificate, an idea began to form. What if someone discovered as an adult that she was adopted? What if there was danger in her birth family that found her even before she discovered she was adopted? From there, my imagination took off.

My verse for the book is one that I meditate on quite a bit as an adopted person. Romans 8:15 says, “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’” What a blessed assurance!

I researched quite a few interesting things while writing Deadly Disclosure. I confirmed that it truly isn’t as easy for an adopted person to find birth parents as many people think. I discovered that many wealthy people still have butlers and those butlers dress rather formally. I found a neat wristwatch for lawyers that may make it to my wish list. But I think the most interesting bit of research was watching videos of people shooting fire extinguishers. Better stand back!

Let’s talk about your writing life:
I wrote five books over the course of four years before I received that most wonderful of phone calls from an editor who wanted to buy that fifth book. That drive to complete a full-length novel was enough to keep me going in between (and sometimes during) nursing sessions with a newborn; diaper changes; dish washing; and phonics and math lessons with my older, homeschooled children. My husband is a huge encouragement and help, and he would often play with and manage the children while the baby was sleeping so I could get in an hour of writing. Now, my oldest girls are teenagers and love to brainstorm with me and proofread along the way. They are also available to run interference with the younger children if I need a bit of writing time.

I am a total plotter and don’t start the actual writing of a book until I have a detailed outline that can be fifty pages long. The very beginning of the process starts, of course, with an idea. It could be something in my life, like reading my birth certificate as I prepare passport applications, or it could come from a news article or something I see as I’m out and about. Questions begin to form, and I’ll scribble down everything that comes to my mind. Organizing those ideas can come later. The important thing in the beginning is to capture every single notion that occurs to me. Eventually, characters begin to form, and the first item I need to begin to visual someone is a name. Once I get the basics of the hero and heroine and the basics of a plot (inciting incident, three suspense turning points, and final showdown), both begin to grow exponentially. Through all this process, I brainstorm with my teen daughters and husband. Of course, everything is subject to change if a better idea comes along. The detailed outline is my favorite part because by that point I have a good handle on the story. Ideas are pinging about dialogue, beats, and plot details, and I give myself the freedom to get it all down without worrying about complete sentences and everything that’s necessary for a proper draft. After the detailed outline, I’ll usually go through three drafts before I feel like it’s done.

Have you ever attended a writer’s conference? If so, which one(s) and what were most helpful about it?
My first conference was the Indianapolis Christian Writers Conference hosted by Wesleyan Publishing House. It was a wonderfully thorough but relatively small conference, and I had a couple of friends who worked there, so it was an easy start for an introvert into the world of conferencing. In the three years I was able to attend before WPH decided not to host it any longer, I had the privilege of meeting Angela Hunt, Jerry Jenkins, Michelle Medlock Adams, and Dennis Hensley, as well as agents and editors. There, I learned of ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers), and now I attend those conferences as time permits.

Apparently August 15th is National Lemon Meringue Pie Day (who knew). What is your favorite dessert?
Chocolate cheesecake (with a cup of coffee).

Tangled Webs by Irene Hannon | Re:View

Tangled Webs indeed! As Irene Hannon’s third book in the Men of Valor series, I had a lot of high expectations for this book and I was not disappointed! I had long since wondered about the third brother in the series. Finn, the troubled one. He was a bit of an enigma to me and mysteries like that are just begging to be solved!

I started this book and got through the first few pages then picked it up the next day and finished it! I don't usually have time to read like this, but I was glad I did for this book. It’s a rollercoaster of ups and downs, twists and turns, and questions at every one of those turns. I would say that it started out with less action than her other books but, because of the way she told the story, you didn’t feel like it was slow at all. The unanswered questions and other plot elements pull you along.

I really really really loved Finn. Definitely my favorite brother out of them all, and Dana was a great female lead as well. In Irene’s characteristic “love at first sight” type of romance, I like that they were both cautious (for various reasons) and took some time to get to know one another.

I also enjoyed her secondary characters immensely, especially Hazel! I love the small town feel and the Walleye was perfect! Irene also included such a compelling story line for her somewhat-ani-hero and I just appreciated the realness to the character and how she perfectly detailed the course of events that led to all of the decisions made (sorry to be vague here but I don’t want to spoil anything).

The only thing I didn’t exactly love was how Finn’s brothers, and Finn himself, use the term “hot” so often to describe Dana. It was like this in all of the books and…though I totally get it, I think one use of that term is about enough for me. But hey, it doesn’t affect the story and it’s probably just a personal thing anyway.

I would definitely recommend this to fans of romantic suspense. There’s a good bit of both in the book, though maybe less action than normal the story makes up for it in my opinion. It’s a great third book in my opinion and makes me look forward to her next series “Code of Honor” which releases fall of 2017!

You and Writing 

 
My bio says that I want readers to Expect an Adventure. This is my personal challenge to take readers to a place physically, mentally, and spiritually where they’ve never been. If I want readers to experience my character’s victories, trials, joys, and defeats then I must do the same. Story is my God-given purpose, and I view it as a ministry.
How did you start writing? 
My husband dared me! “Stop telling me one day you’re going to write a book. Do it now. Quit your job. I give you one year to get anything published.”

What has kept you writing? 
The joy of story written from a Christian worldview.

What or who is the biggest influence in your writing? 
My husband. He’s my best cheerleader.

Why do you write? 
Because I cannot not write. God gave me the gift, and I will honor Him.

Your Writing

Why did you write it?
A good friend of mine is an airport volunteer here in Houston. This group patrols the outer perimeter of IAH on horseback and reports any incidents to the police. She is also a huge dog lover. I wanted to show a real heroine who had the strength to overcome a huge obstacle - in my city.

Do you have a favorite character in this work? If so, why? 
Stacy, the heroine. She’s stronger than she believes, and when faced with tragedies, she chooses to be a survivor.

What is one take-away from your book that you hope readers identify with? 
Life and circumstances do not dictate the person. We all have choices.

What was a challenge you faced while writing it?
Learning about canine diseases and linking them with a genetically engineered technique.

What did you learn while writing it?
All about the Airport Rangers, their mission, training, and dedicated volunteers.

Is there a funny story associated with writing the book?
Yes! I’m petrified of dogs.

We're your characters easy to pin down or did you discover them along the way as you wrote the book?
I do extensive characterization before beginning the writing process, but I always learn so much more while writing.

What made you choose the setting for the book?
My city - Houston. We are the 4th largest city in the nation. A lot goes on here, good and not so good. I want to show real people in the midst of keeping others safe.

What's the most random thing you had to Google for the story?
The various ways drones are used.

What was one thing (or character) that surprised you while writing this book?
Whitt, the twelve-year-old boy that Stacy is attempting to gain custody. I didn’t realize how much he loved her.

What’s your favorite snack while writing?
Black coffee and a handful of peanut butter pretzels.

Writing 

How long did you write before you got published? 
Six months before a devotion was published. My first book was published fifteen months after I finished it.

What’s your encouragement for younger writers aside from “keep writing”?
Never stop learning and to pass on what is learned to another serious writer. The blessings are incredible.

How many rejection letters did you get before being accepted by a publisher?
I’m trying to think - probably eight or ten.

Are you a Panster or Plotter?
I’m both! I have a few critical scenes that will make the story shiver, but how I get there is a thrilling ride.

What is your favorite and least favorite part of the writing process?
I enjoy every part of the creating a story: pre-writing, plotting, beginning the story, the continuous editing, right on to feedback from my publisher. Every moment spent means a better book, and that’s my goal.

How long did it take to publish your first book?
A total of nearly two years. I started submitting before it was finished.

What did you learn along the path to publishing that you’d care to share as encouragement?
Listen and stay atop the publishing industry. Changes happen on a daily basis.

Where do you find inspiration for your story/characters?
Everywhere! Dreams, movies, media, listening to others, etc. 

Are there any books or resources you could recommend to younger writers looking to grow in their craft?
Donald Maass, Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook. James Scott Bell, Plot and Structure. Steven James, Story Trumps Structure.

How do you grow in your writing craft?
By devoting time daily to reading the how-to books, blogs, and the bestsellers in my genre.

How do you balance your writing life with “real” life? Any tips or tricks to share?
It’s all about priorities: God, spouse, family, friends, and writing.

Cold Shot by Dani Pettrey | RE:View

Cold Shot will take you on a ride you won't soon forget with shocking turns, compelling characters, and a threat lingering at every corner. 

This was my first introduction to Dani Pettrey's writing and woozah! Awesome! I was immediately drawn in by her writing style. I really enjoy her descriptions and use of imagery to draw the reader in.

Cold Shot mainly focuses on Griffin McCray and Finley Scott, but the story is filled with other intriguing characters like Griffin's childhood friends Declan and Parker, among others. I loved Griffin and his somewhat grouchy exterior--give me a tough hero any day--but I also liked the other sides to him that are revealed through the book. If we're talking favorite characters though, I think Parker may take the cake...I mean, come one. That Irish accent? *swoon* I also enjoyed Finley's character and her tough, yet delicate sensibility. At first I was a little confused as to what her actual "job" was, because of where we come in at the beginning, but that got cleared up pretty quickly.

As for the plot, loved it! I will say there were a few parts I was almost lost...there is a lot of information given at certain times and, though it's necessary, it felt a little overwhelming at times. It wasn't a distraction though, just a speed bump for me. I also enjoyed the location--hello backyard! She mentioned Severna Park and I was like "woohoo" because I often go up there for photo shoots. But I digress.

The only things I noticed that I was less a fan of were a few "leaps" the characters made at one point. More like assumptions, I guess? I felt they were a little to convenient for the case. And I felt like Griffin was a little bit too enamored with Finley at the beginning...now, this I would almost not mention, but I'm just being honest here. I can see where there is a foundation for it, but I felt like his thoughts were very...overt? But eh--not a real "issue" to me, just a passing thought. It in no way affected my enjoyment of the book.

As a whole, I really enjoyed Cold Shot and I definitely recommend it. I feel like it was a solid, "team based" romantic suspense. I also loved the approach of multiple viewpoints--it heightens the tension and gives depth to the story. Dani's writing is so solid and I am definitely a fan. Excited to go back and check out her Alaskan Courage series (since a sweet friend just gifted me Submerged, book 1). Dani - you've made me a fan!

Thin Ice by Irene Hannon | RE:View

In this second book to the Men of Valor series, Irene Hannon creates an interesting, plot-twisting read following the second oldest McGregor brother, Lance.

Christy Reed is a former Olympic athlete and Lance McGregor joins the FBI after being a Delta Force operator. Talk about two high-octane people meeting over the surprise of Chrisy's sister "coming back to life" after supposedly dying in a fire. True to Irene Hannon form, Lance and Christy realize early on that there's more than just attraction there, but the roadblock of the case is enough to (mostly) keep them apart for the majority of the book.

I think my favorite part of the book was the McGregor brothers! This is totally a personal thing, but I always tend to enjoy reading (and writing) from the male POV more than the female (most of the time). I feel like Irene did a great job of capturing them. What will happen with Finn???

I also feel like Irene included just the right amount of faith elements to show where Christy and Lance were in regards to what they believed and were struggling about, but not to "preach" about where they should be. What was shared, I liked, and felt it was very natural to the story.

One issue I had at the very beginning was the fact that freshly minted Agent Lance McGregor immediately fights an instant attraction of Christy Reed. I just...*sigh*. I understand a guy noticing that a girl is attractive but he was checking her out while on his very first assignment as an FBI agent. It just rubbed me the wrong way. I don't know, maybe that does happen, but it seemed completely unfounded (aside from physical attraction which happens--I get that) and a little premature.

The other issue I had (without going into spoiler-details) is something that happens with regards to one of the secondary characters. The character makes a choice that just didn't sit well with me. It was really hard for me to get past it and see it as a "good" plot choice because of what I think it implies. This is, obviously, personal on my part, but I will say that it could be difficult to read for some.

All in all, a good read. I really liked the quick pace of the ending as well. I'd recommend it to fans of Irene's work--same style as Buried Secrets etc.--and those who enjoy romantic suspense with more romance that knuckle-whitening thrills. I am interested in the last book in the series, mainly because I want to see where Finn comes in and what his story will be!

***Spoiler Alert***

Just a note here: A secondary character makes a choice to take her own life (which helps to further the plot). It's not graphically depicted or anything like that, but the issue I take with it is the fact that the character was agonizing over the decision (a good thing) and focusing on her prayer book (also a good thing) but then does it anyway. It just...didn't sit well with me. It's one thing for her to have made the choice, one that was for the good of the main character at the end, but (to be bluntly honest) I just didn't like it. I feel like I saw ways around it and that it speaks a confusing message. Suicide isn't okay and is, in and of itself, a selfish act. In this case the woman was in a quandary and felt like she had no other means of escape, therefore making her "sacrifice" understandable but even in that situation I don't feel as if the Lord would condone taking your own life, no matter how dire the situation is. I guess we could look at other acts of sacrifice, like going into a battle where you were assured you would die, as a type of "suicide" but I see that as differently I guess.  

For those of you that have read it I'd be interested to know what you thought. Did it bother anyone else?

If I Run by Terri Blackstock | Re:View

A gripping, thrill-inducing read that will captivate you with brilliant writing and twist upon twist.

Let's face it. You will likely lose sleep over this book. I know that I did. But it was actually a very fast read--one that I greatly enjoyed.

The most noticeable thing initially was the fact that Terri wrote in first person, present tense--with two points of view! Personally, I love this. Not every book should be written like this, but I think she made a fantastic choice. The present tense creates a sense of action and the first person perspective allows for more blow-by-blow action. I feel like Terri did a good job of keeping Casey and Dylan separate as characters on the page. The risk you run with two points of view in first person is that they start to sound the same (um, Allegiant anyone?), but I didn't get that feeling at all.

As for the plot, I liked it. It made me think of Safe Haven (at least the movie) but with its own twists. One of the only hesitations I had was a subplot that kicks in toward the 2/3rds mark (eh, maybe a little less). I won't say what it is to avoid spoilers, but it seemed a little too convenient for me - like something was needed to keep the action going and so "it" appeared. I didn't like how "unattached" to Casey (sort of) and Dylan it really was, though it did a great job of creating interest and keeping up the suspense. Yes, I realize all of that is vague...

Casey and Dylan were intriguing characters. I feel like--which is usually the case for the first book in a series--we're only getting the top layer of them though. I mean, things are revealed and motivations run deep, but there's so much more I want to know. Along these lines, there really isn't a romantic element...at least not in the traditional sense. I have a feeling it's coming, and I'll be interested to see how Terri accomplishes it, but I honestly didn't miss it. I know, after this post that comment seems strange, but trust me, there is so much going on you won't miss it.

My end thoughts? A definite recommend from me. I already know it's going on my top books of 2016. Yes, it's an easy read. Yes, it may have been a little convenient in parts. And yes, it may be shorter than it could have been. But, in reality, I really enjoyed it and found myself literally talking out loud to the book and gripping the pages because I didn't know what was going to happen. That, in my book (um, pun intended?) equals a great read!

If you love suspense, mystery, intrigue, and just a good story--get this book.

Secret Rerfuge by Dana Mentink | RE:VIEW

A mysterious path wrong turns and twists will hold your attention to the end!

Secret Refuge was my first introduction to Dana's writing and I really enjoyed it! I love the quick reads of Love Inspired Suspense and enjoyed the approach Dana took to this highly mysterious tale.

Keely Steven's has a stubborn streak a mile wide and is adamant about not needing help from anyone. Mick carries around his guilt like a bag of bricks. When they find themselves caught in between danger and the possibility that things aren't as straight-forward as they seem, the question remains: will Mick find redemption? And will Keely realize that if she doesn't accept his help, she could be putting herself in more danger than even she can handle?

I always feel like, since these are smaller books (word count wise), the romance needs to be moved along at a fast pace, which can often times make it seem unbelievable. I (mostly) didn't feel that about Secret Refuge. The motivations of the characters were tangible and easy to see carried out. Their character changes were also believable and flowed well with the story.

The action was swift and constant. Dana did an excellent job of keeping the reader guessing and, just when you thought you had it figured out, there was another twist or turn. I definitely found myself surprised a few times.

If you love romantic suspense and are looking for a fun, fast read, Secret Refuge is the book for you!

Tell us a little bit about yourself: How did you start writing? What has kept you writing? ...Twenty years ago, recovering from knee surgery, I had an idea for a story in the middle of the night: What if a confident, self-assured FBI agent had his life spin out of control when he son was kidnapped by the drug gang he’d been investigating? I told my husband about it the next day, and (bless him!) he said, “That’s a great story! You ought to write it.”

...Yeah, sure. Me? A mom at home?

....He was a video producer/director at the FBI Academy and began taking me over there and introducing me to agents. They were so helpful! A year later, I had a novel on my computer. It was amazing.

Do you have a favorite book or work that you’ve written? If so, why?
...I have to say, “The Tiger’s Cage,” that first book, is still my favorite. Yes, I’ve learned a lot and I am a better writer now, but what can I say? It was my first baby!

What was the hardest thing about publishing? The easiest?
...The hardest thing about publishing is the inevitable disappointments. So much is out of a writer’s control. Waiting for contracts, then patiently accepting the rejects and downturns in the market, is tough.

...The easiest, for me, is writing—getting lost in a book I’m working on.

Tell us a little bit about your book. Why did you write it?
...“Battered Justice” takes two FBI agents from my first published book, “Bloody Point,” and extends their story. Jake, a non-custodial father of two, remains determined to be a great dad and a terrific agent. Those goals conflict, and when a case he and his partner, Cass, are investigating gives indication his ex-wife’s new husband, Senator Westfield, is corrupt, life really gets complicated.

...“Battered Justice” deals with both domestic abuse and injustice. I wanted to explore both issues. And I couldn’t get “Bloody Point’s” characters out of my head! However, my agent and I agreed no traditional publisher would take it, so I self-published “Battered Justice.”

Do you have a favorite character in this work?
...I love Jake’s masculine tension and his secret love for Cass.

What is one take-away from your book that you hope readers identify with?
...“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, and he will exalt you in due time.” From I Peter 5:6.

Writing

Where do you find inspiration for your story/characters? Are they based on real life or pure imagination or both?
...Hmmm… my sister gave be a sweatshirt with an applique that reads, “Watch out or I’ll put you in my novel!” I have to say I have drawn characteristics from people I know and combined them into unique characters. Just one character—Aunt Trudy—in “Bloody Point” is actually based on a real person. I got her permission to do so. Her story is amazing.
 
...I am close friends with a number of FBI agents, and many more have shared stories or their expertise with me over the years. One said to me, “You’ve gone over to the dark side! You’re thinking like an agent.” That was a compliment!

...The stories may come from the news (I was an editorial writer for thirteen years) or just from my head.

When you write, what is your overall intention with your stories?
...My goal is to share my passion for Christ through “white-knuckle fiction.” I want to create books that keep readers up all night. And I want to depict characters struggling with the same spiritual questions we all do.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors for writing and/or publishing?
...Persist. If God calls you to writing, then just keep writing.

What is your favorite activity during the summer?  
...The beach! And a lot of my novels are set on or near the water.
What are you currently reading?
...“Ordinary,” by Tony Merida, and four books on dogs (research!).

Apparently August 15th is National Lemon Meringue Pie Day (who knew). What is your favorite dessert?
...I don’t do dessert much any more!

I had high expectations for this book - not only because I'm a die-hard Kendig fan, but because Falcon is such an intriguing character and I was desperate to find out what would happen! I wasn't disappointed. From page one I was hooked to the story and enjoyed the ride through the various perspectives that Kendig seamlessly weaves together. Seriously people - you will not be able to stop reading!

As I say with every book I read by her, go Ronie Kendig and never go back ;) I'd highly recommend Falcon (as I would the rest of this series) to fans of action, adventure, emotion-packed characters, and incredible writing. Basically, you can't go wrong.

You and Writing

Tell us a little bit about yourself: How did you start writing? What has kept you writing?
...I started writing in third grade with the story of an imaginary world and fairies named after my friends. I had to ask my teacher for more paper. I think she eventually had to give me a limit. I just couldn’t stop! The story had more to say! I kept writing in classes and wrote poetry for myself. I loved every challenge my teachers and professors threw my way. If I could try a different style or genre, I attempted it with gusto. I wanted to grow and get better, but I had a fear of sharing those stories with others. My family and a mentor finally challenged me to step out. I started with a blog and then pursued publication. Book three is currently in the editing process. My dreams never felt this good.

Do you have a favorite book or work that you’ve written? If so, why?
...I think whatever I am currently working on is my favorite. I just finished Surrendered, which will hit shelves in Winter 2016. It is the final chapter in Nick and Kaylan’s love story, though we might hear about their lives in books to come. As I explored their relationship, I had to take a hard look at what love looks like, not what culture says it is, but what the Lord says it is. I was lost in this scene as Kaylan is questioning her relationship with Nick. As I finished, I felt this heavy weight on my chest. The way I had written Nick – this Navy SEAL, a warrior, a flawed guy striving to be like Jesus – I realized the way he loves Kaylan and pursues her and the way Jesus loves me and pursues me, even when and especially when I’m unlovable. I can’t wait to share that story with readers.

Your Writing

Tell us a little bit about your book. Why did you write it?
...Nick and Kaylan return in Shadowed as Nick faces the demons of his past on a mission to catch Janus, and Kaylan comes to terms with loving a man who leaves.

...Now in California, Kaylan slowly adjusts to life in the SEAL community with new friends, new neighbors, an internship, and mysterious and threatening notes left by a ghost. When items begin to disappear from her home, Kaylan wonders if she will ever find her place in her new reality and wrestles to develop the strength for the life she desires to have with Nick.

...Nick never dreamed his work would follow him home, but now the very terrorist he stalked is threatening everything he holds dear. Nick must learn to trust God with Kaylan’s life as he and his team fight for justice and answers to his past.

...In Shaken, the characters must learn to heal. In Shadowed, they must learn to love. But will their love forever be stalked by shadows? I think readers will love meeting some of Nick’s SEAL buddies and seeing what really makes the heart of a warrior strong.

Do you have a favorite character in this work? If so, why?
...I do. I hate admitting that. They feel like my kids and it feels wrong having a favorite, but I think Logan and his little girl Molly are some of my favorite characters. Logan is a SEAL and a father and husband who just exudes confidence, leadership, and Jesus, and he knows how to have fun! I feel like he is such a voice of wisdom in the book. I know I learned a lot writing him. Molly is just sunshine and innocence. She is a sweet four-year-old who has a curious, innocent, beautiful outlook on the world, and I loved watching her shine and love those around her.

What is one take-away from your book that you hope readers identify with?
...Love is a choice. It’s never easy, but it’s always worth it.

Writing

Where do you find inspiration for your story/characters? Are they based on real life or pure imagination or both?
...My stories and characters are based on the crazy mess in my head and inspiration I see in the world around me. If I see quirks and personality traits in friends, family, or even strangers that fascinate or entice me, I create a character with those traits. In Shaken, Sarah Beth is loosely based on one of my best friends who has the most bubbly personality paired with curly blonde hair and a smile that lights up a room. You can’t help but love her. I chose Kaylan’s passion for helping people and her pursuit of dietetics because of my cousin who has a heart for helping people in third world countries use what they have around them to be healthy and learn how to feed their children. Beware! If you are in my vicinity, anything you say or do is free game for a book.

When you write, what is your overall intention with your stories?
...I think stories should entertain and take you to another place. They have been my escape and my place to dream over the years. But I want my stories to also inspire readers to dream big, have courage, and make a difference. God made you uniquely, and I want readers to find in characters the traits and actions they love and then dare to emulate those things in real life. To use the name of my current series, I want readers to have the heart of a warrior!

What advice would you give to aspiring authors for writing and/or publishing?
...You are never too young or too old to write. You have something to say and a story to tell. The key is figuring out how to do that well. When you write, close the door to what everyone else may think or say and get the story on the page. Know your audience, know what they like, and then just write without fear. That’s the second most important thing I can tell you: write without fear. The most important thing I can tell you is to trust the Lord with the journey.

What is a favorite memory you have of your mother?
...We were on family vacation one summer. My brother, sister, and I were in the pool and mom walked down from the condo. She didn’t like to swim, but she loved to come sit on the side of the pool and dip her feet in the water. She sat down on the side, lifted her feet up, and said, “Do you like my pretty toted paint nails?” I think the three of us burst out laughing as she immediately corrected herself. “Pretty painted toe nails, pretty painted toe nails.” We bought her house shoes that looked like furry feet with painted toenails for Christmas, and the joke and memory have never died.

If you had to choose one type of food, what kind would it be?
...Unfortunately, I have cravings for Italian food quite often. I love the flavors, pastas, bread, and salads. So bad for me, but oh so good.

April showers bring May flowers – or so they say. Do you have a favorite flower? If so, why is it your favorite?
...I love lilies and roses. There is something classy and beautiful, yet simple about both.
