Staying true to it's name, Labyrinth of Lies is just that - a twisted mix of "who is who" in the very best way.

I really enjoyed this second book in the Triple Threat series. I like that the sisters are still involved in each book though in a subdued degree to allow each sister their own story. In this one, Cate goes undercover in an unlikely situation in order to discover the culprit behind the disseverance of a student at a private boarding school.

I really liked the (very slight) creepy situation of Ivy Hall - it was a great read for the fall time - and how Cate and Zeke found themselves working together without knowing they would be. With their past looming, it's a great opportunity for them to decide how they will move forward after their assignments are over.

I was curious how it would work knowing that Cate was posing as a student and Zeke was a teacher--a situation rife for troubling things if you don't know Cate is in her 30s - but Hannon handled it really well.

While there wasn't quite as much romance in this, for the reasons I stated above, I still felt like it progressed well and at the right pace considering their past.

If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense books I think you'd like this one and solving the mystery of who is behind the nefarious things going on.

I'm going to do something different in this review and say that, if you like historical fiction mingled with the impossible, beautiful complexity of a magic system that offers power over colors, you absolutely NEED this book.

Now, on to my thoughts.

I read an advanced copy of this book several months ago and then (in total Emilie fashion) forgot *gasps* to write my review! Um, what? Who am I? What am I doing with my life?

Nyxia by Scott Reintgen | Re:View

Teens in a fight against time and each other. A spaceship heading to a distant planet. A newly discovered race and a powerful substance that may be more dangerous that anyone knows.

Nyxia was an interesting read. I think, initially at least, I assumed there'd be a bit more...space. Now, don't get me wrong, the whole thing takes place in space, but the idea that the characters are on a spaceship is encapsulated in the back of your mind instead of something that really affects the plot.

I found the cast of characters varied and diverse (something I appreciated) and the main object of the plot to be pretty simple: make it on to Eden. Cue chaos, back-biting, competition, and a whole other slew of problems.

Emmett, the main character, was tough for me to pin down. I could understand and appreciate his motivation - coming from a rough neighborhood and wanting to do his best for his parents - but he was hard for me to connect with for some reason. Another thing that was a challenge was the pace. While I feel the book started off well and it kept the intrigue for a while, it became a little slow in the middle. It did speed up at the end, and captured my interest at the end.

I would say I could mildly recommend this to those to enjoy barely sci-fi novels or possibly more of an adventure/contemporary with a technological edge? Sadly, I anticipated a bit more of an epic story for all of the hype that surrounded this book and I really wanted to love it...but it just didn't make the cut for me. You may find you enjoy this more than me, which would make me nothing but happy :)

For my clean readers: There is language and one instance/mention of intimacy (that, in my humble opinion, did not need to be in the book at all) though no details were shared. There's also some violence. I'd probably say 16+.

Are you looking to "makeover" your Christmas? Maybe you're like me and you weren't really sure what that means, but you know your busyness this Christmas isn't healthy? Either way, this book is the answer.

Melissa Spoelstra set's out to help us "makeover" our Christmas in this 31 day devotional that is perfect to read before, during, or after Christmas with an eye toward assessing our traditions and why we hold to them.

Going in to this book I wasn't sure what to expect but I loved that it said "practical approach" on the back cover. To me, there's nothing better than assessing something practically. Our lives are too bogged down as they are with what Christmas is "supposed" to look like. Lots of busyness, expensive gift purchasing, and a commercialized approach to the season, but Melissa gives another way.

Her suggestions, broken down into easily readable devotional chapters, are both heartwarming and actionable. She talks about how we can assess the things we currently do for the holiday's and focuses in on the fact that the traditions that stay should be those that honor Christ and the true meaning of the season.

I love that at the end of each section there are questions to help you think through what had been said and then a section called "A Practical Approach" at the end of each devotion.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking to dig deep into the reasons behind their traditions and business this season. It's an easy read and worth the time to readjust your focus to the One who truly is the reason for the season.

If I'm Found by Terri Blackstock | Re:View

Fast-paced, complex, and powerful, If I'm Found shows readers the beauty of what can happen when we value others over ourselves.

This thrilling second installment of the If I Run series by Terri Blackstock was just as exciting as the first book. Here we find Casey Cox faced with being on the run--again.

It seems as if everything is stacked against Casey. She's got a few advantages, one being that she's able to communicate with Dylan Roberts. I really enjoyed this aspect of the book because: romance. Okay, I know, I know...there's so much more to this book than romance, but what can I say? I'm a sucker for it! I loved how Terri brought their characters together.

I also love love love how there is a juxtaposition of plots going on here. You've got the overall plot of Casey being a fugitive but then you've got Casey's "new" life where she must act in order to do the right thing even if it jeopardizes her own safety. Terri is QUEEN of creating such intriguing plot lines that, while there is a ton going on and you think it could be too convoluted, you see how it all works out seamlessly in the end.

I also love how we see the strengths and weaknesses of Dylan and Casey. They aren't perfect. They have real struggles and they must choose to fight for what is right. It's refreshing and in no way off-putting at how real they both are. 
 
As I did for book one, I felt as if this book was stretched out in order to make it a trilogy. Don't get me wrong--it's a fantastic book! It's well written and gripping! But, during the wrap up, I found myself thinking that it could have come to a conclusion in just two books. I'm happy that there'll be a third because I think we can gather that God will use Casey again in way's she couldn't foresee in the lives of others. I also love the characters so I'm looking forward to see what happens. So really, it's not a negative as much as it's an observation. It's a shorter book but packed with action.

A definite recommend from me for those who like romantic suspense, suspense, and a action-packed plot. It's not heavy on the romance but just right (in my opinion). Besides, Terri deals with some tough topics in an honest but careful way. You'll find yourself rooting for Casey and Dylan by the end (if not from the very beginning).

Without Warning by Joel C. Rosenberg | RE:view

An epic ending to a fantastic trilogy. Rosenberg will have you on the edge of your seat, tugging at emotions, and gripping your attention through the whole book.

Following on the heels of the two, action-packed novels before this, Without Warning lives up to its suspense/thriller title and delivers a powerful, thrilling, and heart-wrenching end to the J. B. Collins series.

We pick up close to where we left off with The First Hostage and jump straight into a very action-packed beginning. It's something I really appreciate about Rosenberg's writing--he grips you with the action but also has the ability to instruct you on issues, thoughts, and (of course) J.B.'s journey as a character.

This book was, in a word, heart-wrenching. I won't say much about why to avoid any spoilers but I will say that it took a few turns I was not expecting--at all. Though, to be fair, everything that happened was logical to the plot and only aided in furthering the story. Yes, there are some hard things, but there is hope too. Such beautiful hope.

I stared this whole series through audiobooks, something I'm really glad I did because I was able to really get a handle on pronouncing some of the names. But I was also able to see how it was to read a tangible copy and I really enjoyed it. The audiobooks are truly fantastic, but there is something to be said about holding the book in your hands.

I would recommend not only this book, but really the whole series! I've told so many people about this series and about Rosenberg's fantastic writing. In my mind, he's on par with some of my other favorite authors like David Baldacci and Roine Kendig with the way he writes and the themes he incorporates. If you like political/action thrillers I think you'll be a fan of this.

One last thing of note for me is the reality that Rosenberg addresses faith in such a real, tangible way. I absolutely loved J.B.'s personal story coinciding with the overall plot of the three books. It was real, refreshing, and at times extremely honest.

What first intrigued me about this book, aside from the eye-catching title, was the fact that Lee used stories from women that she had known to create the majority of her content. As someone who loves reading biographies and real-life stories, I was really intrigued to see how Lee would incorporate the stories into a book that was devotional in nature.

Each chapter is titled with a single word like Hoping, Belonging, and Trusting etc., and mingles Lee's personal history in counseling, her mental health work, and personal struggles along with stories from women she's come in contact with. Then, at the end of each chapter, there are "For Reflection" questions which make this a great tool for Bible studies and group sessions.

This book is powerful. Not all of the stories told are wrapped up with a happy little bow on top or told in a way to make you feel good about yourself. Instead, they depict real life and encourage you to ask God the hard questions without fear knowing that He will answer you. I was brought to tears many times during the course of reading this and found myself craving the next chapter to see what else Lee had to say. I think this was (at least in part) due to the fact that Lee is very open in this book, detailing her own struggles with a frank honesty that is refreshing and encouraging.

I think this quote sums up the focus of the book perfectly:

"Be vulnerable. Be real. Be raw and let your naked bravery shine bright. In doing so, you help others see hope. You help others have faith. That is brave. That is beautiful."
(Brave is the new Beautiful, page 215)

I highly recommend this book to all women! It would be perfect in a small group setting (or even a slightly larger group). With a focus on being raw and honest with one another, I think women could truly see lies exposed, walls broken down, and true, beautiful bravery as the result of reading and discussing this book along with prayer and Bible reading.

Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh | Re:View

Enthralling and inventive, Flame in the Mist will grip you with its creativity, delight you with its humor, and hold you to the end, leaving you wanting more.

I absolutely loved this book! I wasn't sure what to expect when I first chose to read it for review - I knew it was "making the rounds" as a new, popular YA Fantasy but I was hesitant to pick it up. Not for any other reason than that my TBR is rather insane and I had other books I was working through...but this cover drew me in. It tricked me, luring me to give in. So I did. I am SO glad I did!

From the moment I began Flame in the Mist, I was hooked. Ahdieh's writing is lyrical and beautiful. Like a song played by a skilled musician, you can't help but sit and listen--or in this case, read. And read I did. I ran through pages and pages with ease because of the story as well as the skill of the story-weaver.

I was intrigued by the characters. Mariko is such a beautiful, complex character who is at once strong and weak in the best ways. Strong so that we can view her as a she truly is, and weak so that we can see her shortcomings and where growth must happen. On a note about Mariko and women in general in Flame in the Mist, I really appreciated how Ahdieh represented women in this book. None of the girls were "looking for a hero to save them" (as some even stated) and the bent was definitely toward strong, female protagonists, but not for the sake of strength alone. It was about finding the beauty and strength in being a woman, not becoming like a man to find that strength (which is slightly ironic giving the plotline). Mariko's strength was in who she was as a person, not her gender, but her gender didn't mean she was weak either. I like that both men and women were portrayed as strong in this book, working alongside one another.

I won't say more about characters at this point since I don't want to give away even the smallest of spoilers, but I will say the web of intricate characters Ahdieh weaves is beautiful and complex.

The setting and magic depicted in the book was also delightful. If anything, I would have loved to know and see more of the magic. I did enjoy how it was woven into the plot, but sometimes it left me wanting more or an acknowledgment of its strange nature within context. The characters just seemed to accept it without question which, without being given a reason for this acceptance, seemed strange to me.

Lastly, I am a little frustrated that I didn't realize this was a series. While the ending was not exactly a cliffhanger...it kind of was. It doesn't take away from the beauty of the story or writing, nor does it diminish my love for this book, but it does make me a little annoyed that I have to wait (probably a year) before I get book 2. *sigh*

I highly recommend this to lovers of YA Fantasy (or Fantasy in general). I think you'll find it enjoyable as well as intriguing.

*A final word*
I have heard some say that the plot is a loose retelling of the elements of Mulan into Japanese culture and, personally, I'm really enjoyed having that thought in the back of my mind because, loving the story of Mulan as I do, it made me think of that story with fondness and be able to appreciate the skill and ingenuity that Ahdieh wove her own tale. It's not exact to Mulan's story, but there are things that are similar in a good, creative way. That said, I think the Flame in the Mist is completely its own story and diverges in all the right ways.

A note to my clean readers: This book was relatively clean - there were a few cuss words and some kissing scenes as well. I'd probably rate it for ages 15+.

The Wedding Shop by Rachel Hauck | Re:View

A tale of God's perfect timing that spans the ages.

She's done it again. I don't know what kind of magical mojo Rachel Hauck weaves into her stories but they get me right in the feels every time. Every. Time. Yes, I spent a good portion of this book crying...In a reflective, happy, sad, mixed-emotions and feelings kind of way. I'm pretty sure not everyone will be affected in this way, but somehow this book hit me right in a soft spot and pressed in. Deeper and deeper.

This book--and the characters journey--reminded me that God is powerful, influential, and working in this world (yes, even though it is a fictional book). It's one of the many things I admire about Rachel's writing - her ability to gently remind us of the fact that God is a BIG God and capable of doing amazing things. He's a God of miracles. I remember one line hit me especially where Haley says, "...but I'm not going to let a little thing like money stand in my way." What truth! And what a great theme--considering the fact that God's will is bigger than money or our ability to plan things out (but I digress).

This story, like The Wedding Dress and The Wedding Chapel, is "dual time" encompassing a story from history with the present. I'm not a huge fan of this in general, but the stories have really grown on me. If I were to choose which story I liked best between Cora Scott and Haley Morgan I'm not sure that I could pick. Both were well thought out, developed, and enticing in their own right.

Haley reminded me a lot of myself - not exactly in personality, but at the core of who she is and what she focused on in this book. Her devotion to opening The Wedding Shop and her appreciation for its history is also something that resonates deep in me. I love history and want to see it cherished and preserved. I loved Cora's character and storyline, though I was frustrated with her at times for being "blind". Then again, aren't we all blind to things we don't want to see sometimes?

And the ending. *sigh* I won't share much here other than the fact that I was at around 50% one night and finished the rest of the book (staying up until 2 am) just to see what happened. And I loved it!

If you like present day romance, historical romance, or (like this book) a combination, you are going to love this book! It gives you the best of both worlds and a woven story that will pull you through until the end and have you rooting for The Wedding Shop.

The Bachelor Girl's Guide to Murder by Rachel McMillan | RE:View

Fun, fanciful, mysterious - the perfect read for fans of Sherlock Holmes.

Set in 1910 Toronto, Canada, the two female detectives Merinda Herringford and Jem Watts tackle crime in the city—or, at least they want to. When the deaths of two Irish women kick start their detective business, they find that drastic measures and ridiculous disguises are the only answer to escape the Morality Squad that’s hot on their heels. Add in handsome police constable Jasper Forth and daring reporter Ray DeLuca and you’ve got a mystery worth figuring out.

I enjoyed this jaunt through the streets of Toronto on the heels of mystery and discovery inspired by Sherlock Holmes. I’ve long been a fan of Holmes and enjoyed this nod to his mysteries and detective acumen. I found Jem to be an adorable character who’s growth through the book was enjoyable to watch. Merinda was slightly more difficult to love, as in the way of Sherlock. She had her lovable moments, but there were times when she was slightly oblivious in a way that made me a bit mad at her. Then again, that could have been the point.

I also enjoyed the romance aspect (being a fan of romance) and definitely enjoyed Ray’s character. I did, however wish there was more background into Merinda. I think I expected the story to be more about her (as a Sherlock figure) but that wasn’t really the case (no pun intended).

The only thing that I didn’t enjoy was the point of view changes. I’m a stickler when it comes to POV (must be a personal thing) but I love to be “in” someone’s head and know that’s where I rest. I feel as if I can truly get to know a character that way. That was not the case for this story and, often times when it switched POV in the middle of a scene, I wondered how we knew what we did. This always jerks me out of the story and was the case in this book. I’m sure there was a stylistic reason for it; I just don’t personally enjoy it. I did however enjoy the asides by way of footnote – they were fun!

I would recommend this to fans of Sherlock Holmes, historical fiction, and lovers of fun and lighthearted mysteries.

The story of Taylor Branson and her new husband Jack is juxtaposed to an older tale of aging high school football coach, Jimmy Westbrook and his estranged love, Collette Greer. I enjoyed this dual-time story set in past and present day New York and Hearts Bend Tennessee. Of course, the fact that Taylor was a photographer appealed to me as well, seeing as how I am also one. As I've come to expect with Rachel's books, her descriptions painted a vivid image for me and the depth of each character was strong. Emotions came off the page, affecting me in a personal way. I also enjoyed the ending and the strong themes that were wrapped together cementing the importance of restoration.

One thing I did want to see more of was Taylor and Jack's story. I felt like--at a certain point which I won't say so as not to spoil anything--I wanted to see more of why they changed not just how, but maybe I'm being nitpicky ;)

I'd definitely recommend this to fans of Rachel Hauck as well as those who enjoy romance, historical romance, and dual-time novels.

Seek and Hide by Amanda G. Stevens | RE:View

I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda G. Stevens at a conference a few years ago and during that time I did some headshots for her. Then we ended up at the same terminal for a flight and got to talking. I just love this girl and was super excited when I saw on Facebook that she'd sold her series to David C. Cook! Now, a little late to the game, here I am reviewing that very book (the first in her Haven Seekers series). I cannot say enough good things about Amanda or her writing...but I'll try ;)

I was blown away by this book. From the very first page until the ending I was captured by Amanda's writing style and the unique perspective she's given her characters. Set in the not-so-distant (and not so far-fetched) future, Seek and Hide explores the reality of a world with government controlled church.

Marcus Brenner, a new Christian, is a fantastically complex and yet completely endearing character who is by far my favorite throughout the story. His motivations, emotions, and commitment to protect the ones he cares about propel him to set aside personal safety for the good of others.

Aubrey Weston just want's to protect her son, though that reality becomes more difficult than she would have expected. I appreciated Aubrey's growth throughout the book and the way that Amanda dealt with difficult faith issues that aren't localized to a fictional world but that stretch across to connect with readers in today's world.

Seek and Hide mixes complex yet relatable characters with riveting plot twists to provide a thrilling read that will force you to turn page after page until the very end.

I highly recommend this book to my readers! Amanda is a fantastic writer and the twists and turns of the plot will keep you guessing to the end. She combines thrilling suspense and characters with depths to explore that go beyond the pages. I also love how she deals with difficult truths and doesn't shy away from emotions and subjects that we deal with today. Five starts to Seek and Hide...now on to book 2 Found and Lost ;)

Falcon by Ronie Kendig | RE:View

I had high expectations for this book - not only because I'm a die-hard Kendig fan, but because Falcon is such an intriguing character and I was desperate to find out what would happen! I wasn't disappointed. From page one I was hooked to the story and enjoyed the ride through the various perspectives that Kendig seamlessly weaves together. Seriously people - you will not be able to stop reading!

As I say with every book I read by her, go Ronie Kendig and never go back ;) I'd highly recommend Falcon (as I would the rest of this series) to fans of action, adventure, emotion-packed characters, and incredible writing. Basically, you can't go wrong.

The Inn at Ocean's Edge by Colleen Coble | RE:View

An extravagant hotel high up on cliffs overlooking the ocean. Secrets surrounding a missing year in Claire Dellamarie's life. The mysterious disappearance of Luke Rocco's mother. What is behind the intrigue surrounding Claire and her family? What will become of the memories that are starting to surface? Will Luke finally be able to discover what happen to his mother?

The Inn at Ocean's Edge by Colleen Coble had me wrapped up in curiosity from start to finish. The introduction to Claire's life is at once intriguing and frustrating. Why won't people tell Claire the truth? What is the truth? Why does the Hotel Tourmaline hold a special place in Claire's memory?

In addition to these questions, I was also interested in finding out Luke's story. What happened to his mother? Did it have something to do with Claire's disappearance?

I enjoyed Claire and Luke's characters. Claire is a very strong woman who is forced into situations where that strength is tested. Luke is also strong, but in a different, steady way. I enjoyed their connection in the book and the zing of romance sparked between them.

The only thing I would note is that I felt some of the scenes were a little too abrupt. I enjoyed the read, but at times I felt as if there was some awkwardness or quick closure where I wanted to know more. Such is the nature of a mystery/suspense though.

I definitely recommend this to fans of romantic suspense and mystery novels. Colleen will keep you guessing! In the back of my mind I drew parallels to Murder, She Wrote (probably because I just love that show) due to the location and mysterious nature of the plot, but of course it was missing Jessica Fletcher ;)

Writer Off The Leash by Michelle Griep | RE:View

Hilarious. Refreshing. Honest.

I love the combination of humor and truth that Michelle has combined in Writer Off The Leash. You'll be smiling from the minute you pick this book up until the minute you put it down. I personally I found many "tweet-able" truths contained within the pages here (and we all know that's an important thing!).

As you dig deeper into Writer Off The Leash, you see the harsh reality of what it means to be a writer. Michelle doesn't shy away from "telling it like it is" nor does she make excuses. Though she sympathizes with the desire to make those excuses. Writing is hard work and you've got to be up to the challenge.

I would recommend this book in a couple of ways. First, I'd recommend it to people who are considering the idea of being a writer. You may be asking yourself, "Is writing something I really want to get in to?" or "What is it like to submit myself to the 'writing life'." This book would be for you. Secondly, I'd recommend it to those who are writers and need a kick-start (or a kick in the pants). Maybe you've been relaxing (dare I say 'laying down on the job'?) and need to be reminded of what it means to be called to be a writer. This book is for you too!

So, do yourself a favor and take a few days to read through Writer Off The Leash. Use a highlighter to make note of her amazing nuggets of truth, and springboard forward from reading it right into your next manuscript.

Motherless by Erin Healy | RE:View

If I had to pick three words to describe my feelings while reading Erin Healy's Motherless, they would be:

Introspective. Detailed. Mysterious.

Erin's descriptions come off the page and swirl into filmy existence like smoke from wet wood. They create a "presence" that is as eery as her plot.

I will leave discussion of most of the plot to the description below and instead focus on my thoughts on the book as a whole without many specifics. It's one of those books you need to experience in order to understand.

I will say her approach was very interesting, taking the viewpoint that she does and telling the story as she has. From the plot arise questions about life, death, truth, lies, and a sense of the intricacies of life seen from an unusual perspective.

I enjoyed this book, however it wasn't what I was expecting. Then again, I'm not sure I knew what to expect. Expectations aside, it's well written, beautiful descriptive, slightly haunting, very intriguing, and has a touch of light suspense. If you've enjoyed Erin's previous novels I'm sure you will enjoy this.

I will give it four stars and would recommend it to someone willing to be mentally involved with an issue and happy to be led on a slower paced, intriguing mission in pursuit of truth. You will be surprised, if not content with what you discover.

I had the chance to read the first book in this series, No One To Trust, and enjoyed this second installment. Eason is great at keeping you guessing all the way to the end! I will say, however, that some parts did feel a little slow in the middle and I found myself wishing there had been a little bit more chemistry between Adam and Danielle.

That said, this was a great, thrilling read that will surprise you over and over again. A definite recommendation to those who like romantic suspense!
