You and Writing

Tell us a little bit about you and writing...
One of the questions I get asked often is when did I know I wanted to be a writer. For me, it was about ten years ago. God was calling me to write, but it wasn’t until I read a Lori Wick’s series The English Garden that I began write. I remember saying with ready fingers pressed on the keyboard, “Are you sure, God? I never wanted to write.” But there I was, typing away at the keys with a burden to share a story I had no idea where it would be heading.

Stepping out in faith isn’t only in words, but in actions, and I’m so glad I did! I’m inspired by the Lord to write Christian fiction so people may know the love of Christ. To know the depth He will go to have a relationship with us. And though we struggle, He uses us, He uses people like me, the ordinary, to do out of the ordinary things. Unexpected things—like writing.

Your Writing

Let's talk about your book...

Why did you write it?
RESTORED is the second book in the Unending Love series and it has taken me about six years to write. Not that it was difficult, I mean, it’s a story I wanted to write, one I knew I could write, but something was missing.

Four years ago, a friend and I attended the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference and during the conference, she and I discussed RESTORED. We came up with different plots, but nothing felt right. Months later I was diagnosed with cancer and I began a journey I didn’t want to be on. I stuffed this novel away and almost gave up on God’s call to write. But as time passed, and God began to work on my heart through my cancer, I struggled, but I continued to write. This is where Steven’s story was born. RESTORED is a story about lost love being given a second chance when you least expect it.

Do you have a favorite character in this work? If so, why?

I love Steven in RESTORED. He has an inner strength and kindness that draws me. I couldn’t help but to cheer for him, even before his cancer prognosis, because his desire for family and the sacrifices he’s made for other’s happiness stirs my heart.

What is one take-away from your book that you hope readers identify with?
That God is the Restorer of our souls, our hearts, our relationships, our families, our health and the list goes on. In Him all things can be restored, even when we think everything might be lost. Steven’s story is one of restoration and the realization that anything is possible with God no matter the circumstances.

What made you choose the setting for the book?
The setting was easy since I grew up in Florida. We visited a new beach every summer or revisited many twice. Even as I’m typing this, I can hear the waves instead of the laundry that’s washing in the distance. =)

What’s your favorite snack while writing?
My favorite snack while writing is coffee and chocolate!

RESTORED

Writing

What’s your encouragement for younger writers aside from “keep writing”?
When I first started writing, I was struggling to know how to go about being published, who to speak with and was getting discouraged. I remember sitting with a room full of children at the time, reading this story about faith, hope, and trusting God. It literally brought tears to my eyes. The title of the children’s book was Tell Me About Faith by Joel Anderson. The Lord says that we must come to Him like little children, and there I was, needing to surrender it all, believing by faith and not by what I could see. As writers, and with every part of our lives, we must do the same, focus on God and walk by faith.

Are you a Panster or Plotter?
I’m a Panster!

What is your favorite and least favorite part of the writing process?
My favorite part of the writing process is coming up with stories, the characters, the situations they put themselves in, and the conflict they have to live through. When I sit down to write my first draft there is such a satisfaction that I can’t begin to explain, but I love seeing everything come together.

You

What are you currently reading?
As of right now, I’m not reading anything due to my fast approaching deadlines for two stories To Gain a Mommy and The Rescue that release this Fall. However, my reading pile has grown over the last months and I can’t wait to dive in!

Dressed for Death

Drew and Madeline Farthering arrive at a Regency-Era house party at Winteroak House, excited to be reunited with old friends, including Drew’s former Oxford classmate Talbot Cummins. Tal is there with his fiancée, Alice Henley, and though many present seem worried about the couple, nobody is prepared when Alice dies from an apparent overdose. Tal refuses to believe she’d taken the drugs intentionally, and a dark question arises of whether the death is an accident or murder.

The police have their own information though, and Drew is shocked when they arrest someone he’s trusted and admired since his childhood—someone who’s been smuggling drugs into the country for years. Stunned by what has happened, Tal begs Drew to get to the bottom of everything, but Drew’s never felt more unsettled. Questioning his own ability to see people as they really are, Drew doesn’t know who to trust, and he’s not ready for the secrets he’s about to uncover—or the danger he’ll bring down on everyone he holds dear.

What are the names of your pets?
I have three cats: Elizabeth who is five, Petie who is three, and Eddie (a girl!) who is one. I love them madly, even Eddie who won't stop chewing my pens.

Favorite place you’ve traveled to?
I have several places I love, but I think York, England is my favorite. It still has its medieval wall around the central part of the city and one of the most glorious cathedrals ever. It's a fascinating place to visit.

What's your favorite chore?
I don't get a chance to do it often enough, and I really, really need to do it now, but I love organizing my things. It's lovely to clear everything out and put it in good order. Sometimes I find things I didn't even know I had. It's like a treasure hunt.

The Red Door Inn
by Liz Johnson

Published: March 1, 2016
From: Revell
Purchase: The Red Door Inn

Marie Carrington is broke, desperate, and hoping to find sanctuary on Prince Edward Island while decorating a renovated bed-and-breakfast. Seth Sloane moved three thousand miles to help restore his uncle's Victorian B and B--and to forget about the fiancée who broke his heart. He wasn't expecting to have to babysit a woman with a taste for expensive antiques and a bewildering habit of jumping every time he brushes past her.

The only thing Marie and Seth agree on is that getting the Red Door Inn ready to open in just two months will take everything they've got--and they have to find a way to work together. In the process, they may find something infinitely sweeter than they ever imagined on this island of dreams.

Get to know Liz...

If your main character celebrated Halloween, what would they dress up as?
Marie would definitely don a straw hat, pinafore, and long red braids to be Anne Shirley from her favorite book, Anne of Green Gables.

If your book became a movie, who would you cast for your main characters?
Marie would be played by Rachel Bilson (Heart of Dixie). She’s very petite with long, wavy brown hair. And she has just enough spirit to play Marie, who often has a snide comment. And Seth would be played by Jonathan Patrick Moore. He’s tall and dark and broody—and carrying a heavy weight on his shoulders.

What’s your favorite book?
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare has been my favorite since . . . well, for as long as I can remember. I adore Kit, a free spirit from Barbados, who ends up in a very strict Puritan community in the late 1600s. I think Nat Eaton was my first literary crush.

Sometimes love arrives when you least expect it.

Dr. Steven Moore is known nationally for saving lives. If only he could save his own. Unable to deal with his cancer prognosis, he retreats to a happier time in his past—to the woman who once stole his heart.

Four years after the death of her beloved husband, bookstore owner Elizabeth Roberts still struggles to sustain her faith and joy in the Lord as she raises her two sons. She strives to find a way through her family's grief, never suspecting a man from her past might offer hope for her future.

But how can there be a future when he's only come to kiss her and says good-bye?

Get to know Tanya...

What’s one thing you must have/do in the morning?
I. Must. Have. Coffee. =)

If your main characters were animals, what would they be?
I’d have to say Lions. I’ll never forget this one year we were visiting family in Kentucky and took a trip to the Louisville Zoo. While waiting for family members to join us, I noticed the Lion exhibit and how a male and a female lion seemed drawn to each other. They stood side by side for some time before the female lay at the male’s feet and the male proceeded to lick her face and ear. It was an incredible scene, as if he was claiming and protecting her.

What's one chore you hate doing?
I love to cook, but hate doing the dishes. However as Agatha Christie said, “The best time for planning a book is while you're doing the dishes.” I’m taking her words to heart!

Tanya Eavenson | Spread the Christmas Joy

Family Traditions, Memories, and Jesus

For years growing up our tradition was to gather with family on Christmas Eve. Aunts, uncles, and cousins I hadn’t seen since the year before would flock together for this one day. Even now, I can picture the older men sitting at their squared card tables playing dominoes and smoking cigars. No matter where you were in the house, the sound of shuffling and clinking tiles could be heard.

This is a memory I will never forget, and was a precious time growing up. But when my first daughter came into the world around Christmas time, I told my husband I wanted to start my own family tradition, one that would help our children understand what Christ did coming as a babe. My husband knew how important this was for me since I hadn’t grown up in a Christian home. So the next year we began our own family tradition.

Every year on Christmas day, whether we go home for the holidays or not, we make a birthday cake for Jesus. The kids get up in the morning and help me make the cake, from stirring the ingredients to layering the icing on thick, and yes, they like a lot of icing. Then after dinner we bring out the cake, light the candles, and sing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus. Now, you might be wondering who blows out the candles. We all do because Jesus came for all.

I pray when my children get older, they will have their own traditions, but they will always remember praising and worshiping Christ on Christmas day. Even with something as simple as a cake.

Jesus’s Birthday Cake

Ingredients:
  • 1 box of cake mix
  • Food coloring (at least four colors)
  • Bundt pan
  • Cooking spray
  • Icing (any)
Directions:
  • Make cake mix as instructed on the box.
  • Separate cake mix into the same amount of bowls as food coloring and add food coloring to those bowls. Mix well.
  • Spray the bundt pan.
  • Take one color of cake mix and pour around the bottom of the bundt pan. Then take another color adding it on top. Do not mix. Add cake mix in layers, adding on top of each color until done.
  • Place in oven.
  • Let cake cool before icing.
When it comes time to cut the cake, you will see the center looks like a rainbow. It represents the story of Noah and God’s promises. And just as God made promises to them, He also made promises to us. One day Jesus will come back for those who love Him.

Get to know Tanya...

Coffee or tea?
Coffee. For me there’s nothing more relaxing than having a cup of coffee and reading a great book. C.S. Lewis wrote, “You can’t get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me.” I feel the same way about coffee!

Favorite dessert?
I discovered my favorite dessert just last year. It took me over forty years to find it, but found it I did! Last fall my husband and I made a pumpkin roll that left us wanting more. Don’t believe me? The recipe says it serves 10, but it only served the two of us. Yes, it was that good!

Who is your favorite secondary character?
My favorite secondary character is Dr. Steven Moore from my novel Unconditional. He’s the tall, dark, and handsome type, but not only is he good looking, his heart for the Lord is his driving force. He lives for what is true and right, even if it breaks him in the process. I actually loved Steven’s character so much, I had to write it! Steven’s story releases winter of 2016 and I can’t wait!
