Jaime Jo Wright | Author Chat
What better person to have a coffee with for Author Chat than Jaime Jo Wright aka Writer & Professional Coffee Drinker! I'm so excited to have her as my guest and I think you're really going to enjoy her interview! Professional coffee drinker & ECPA/Publisher's Weekly best-selling author, Jaime Jo Wright resides in the hills of Wisconsin writing spirited turn-of-the-century romance stained with suspense. Coffee fuels her snarky personality. She lives in Neverland with her Cap’n Hook who stole her heart and will not give it back, their little fairy TinkerBell, and a very mischievous Peter Pan. The foursome embark on scores of adventure that only make her fall more wildly in love with romance and intrigue.
Let's get real...
If your book became a movie, who would you cast for your main characters?
Well, I’d definitely cast Tom Hiddleston for Joel (and then I’d be sure I was on set every day). Ivy would be played by me, because otherwise I’d be really jealous of anyone opposite Tom—ahem—I mean, Joel.
Grant would be played by Ryan Eggold from The Blacklist
Kaine would be played by Italia Ricci who is currently starring opposite Keifer Sutherland on Designated Survivor.

Name three places you’d like to travel to & why...
Well I love LOVE to travel. I’ve had the blessing of traveling many places around the world but three remaining on my bucket list are: Ireland (because it’s green), Norway (because my husband is Norwegian), and Russia (because I love cold and snow)
Share one pet peeve you have.
I’m pretty flexible with stuff, so not much gets under my skin. But I really hate arriving at the office in the morning being talked to before I get my stuff in order and coffee poured. I’m sort of the proverbial morning “crank”.
Which of your characters do you secretly have a crush on?
If I had a crush on one my of characters it’d be Joel Cunningham. But mainly because the model for his character was Tom Hiddleston. *Insert swoony-sigh here

Favorite season?
Summer. I like heat. Unless it’s a hot flash, then I want AC immediately. But otherwise, I like heat.
What's your favorite chore?
Favorite and chore should not be in the same sentence. But if I had to choose something, grocery shopping. On an empty stomach. In one of those stores where there’s a tasting booth on every aisle. And they don’t mind you coming back for seconds. Or thirds. I think you get the idea.
What’s one thing you must have/do in the morning?
After a quick stop in the bathroom (TMI) then I turn to my devotions. Right now I’m working on a devotion book called Transformation: 365 daily readings that will change your life. I’m writing it one day at a time as I travel through the Bible chronologically.

Would you rather go to the future or go to the past?
I would rather go to the past. I mean, who wouldn’t right? Visit all those old places and see stories unfold before your eyes! I’d want to spend a day with Nathaniel Hawthorne, the classic writer of The Scarlett Letter or my personal favorite of his: The House of Seven Gables. But I’d also like to spend a day in my hometown and traverse its historic streets, mingle with its upper echelons, and work in the woolen mill with its hardworking lower class.
What are the names of your pets? If you don't have any, what would you name your pets?
I have two cats (I’ll be an old cat-lady someday!). Maddie, is a black cat with yellow eyes and a lover-kitty. Ivy, is a gray calico with spit and vinegar and a heart of loyalty that would challenge any dog! I also have four frogs. Actually, my KIDS have four frogs and I am their sole caregiver. Also, I do not take responsibility for their names. Our leopard frogs are: Hottie (ahem. Again, not my idea), and Gia. Our tree frogs are: Lily and Booey.
If you were stranded on an island what are three things you couldn’t live without?
Coffee. Definitely coffee. My family. Cause, let’s face it, without my little Peter Pan I’d be completely lost, and my Tinkerbell Co-Co is my soulmate in mischief, and, well, Cap’n Hook is scrappy and rougish and you sort of need that personality on a deserted island. My Kindle. I’ve enough books on there to keep me occupied for at least a year.

Jaime Jo Wright | Spread The Christmas Joy
When Christmas Falls Silent
Silent Night, Holy Night are words synonymous with Christmas. That reflective peace, the awe surrounding the holy Child’s birth, the fascination of the miracle that has occurred. But silence at Christmas is often filled with a numbing pain. The type of silence that occurs when voices fall still. Voices that have spoken, laughed, sung, and whispered throughout every Christmas you can recall. The voices of loved ones no longer here.
This Christmas is bittersweet for me, and the silence is impacting me in very poignant way. It is my first Christmas—ever—without a grandparent. My first Christmas since I was ten, (insert: thirty years), that my Gramma has not had a present wrapped beneath the tree. The scent of her Folgers (gasp! Cheap coffee) has drifted away, the sound of her voice giving my mom instructions as if she were still ten herself, and the conspiratorial winks she cast me when no one was looking.
My Gramma was the other half of me. I always wanted to believe I was like my Gramma Wright. Sweet, soft spoken, kind, gracious, and sensitive. But let’s face it, I am my Gramma Greenwood in spades. Direct, to-the-point, sentimental-to-a-point until reality is just that, reality, so face it and move on. A bit sarcastic, sometimes cynical, would fight to the death for her family, is loyal to a fault, and loves with every passionate ounce of her poker-faced being. Granted, Gramma wasn’t dramatic like I can be, nor super witty, and she wasn’t goofy—usually. But, Gramma got me, and I got her. We were, after all, kindred spirits. She knew it. I knew it.
This Christmas is still holy, as we celebrate Jesus’ birth, but I am very aware of the silence that sometimes envelopes a celebration. That silence of treasured memories, suppressed tears, and an empty chair. I am also more aware of the promise that arrives in the silence, in the shadow of a manger. The promise of hope, of continued life, of grace, and the knowledge that the last “I love you”, truly wasn’t the last.
My six-year-old daughter has her eternal home planned, complete with blueprints. I really hope Jesus is ok with the concept of elephants standing sentinel outside her bedroom doors, slides from the second story to the first story in the place of stairs, and a coffee bar suited for “mommy’s visits”. It’s funny, now, in the Christmas silence, that the imagination of a six-year-old doesn’t seem so silly any more. I have put in a few requests for my eternal home as well. The coffee bar sounds like a really good idea, I’d like to have a ginormous bed where I can sleep for hours with no threat of alarm clocks, and I’d like a huge library with red walls and dark, walnut shelving. But the outside is taking on less magnanimous design. It resembles a front porch, some potted geraniums, the drifting smell of Folger’s coffee, and Gramma standing on the stairs, waiting . . .
Yes, Christmas is silent for now, but it won’t be forever.

You and Writing
Tell us a little bit about yourself...
Why do you write? Writing is my other-world, and it always has been. It’s that dangerous place you go into your mind where the rest of the world drifts away and you float into adventures that take spiraling turns you never expected. I have always had an overactive imagination, so I married a guy I call “Cap’n Hook” because he has imagination in the negatives and his pragmatism keeps me balanced and my feet on the ground. Poor man always has to deal with me lifting up objects like paper clips or toothpicks and contemplating aloud how you could use it as a murder weapon. Or, worse, the poor man has to deal with me staring at him with dreamy eyes and swooning when he walks in the door all covered in saw dust and dirt from logging our back woods. Gosh. Hunkafide.
I love to spend time passing on my imagination to my Tinkerbell and Peter Pan, and my kiddos have it in spades (so poor Cap’n Hook is pretty much outnumbered). When I’m not writing, I have a day job where I direct people as a Director of Sales, Development & Associate Relations. It’s a hefty job, but gives me a lot of flexibility so I can work out of coffee shops sometimes. (Writer’s paradise)
Emilie here: Love this "look" into you Jaime! I tend to think more in the imaginative world than the real one ha!
Your Writing
Tell us a little bit about your novella...
When I wrote my novella it was starkly clear to me that it must be set in New Mexico. All the Western states seemed to be well represented in novels, especially that Texas! But I grew up going to New Mexico in the summers to visit my Uncle’s horse ranch and my grandparents who lived next door. So there’s a part of me that has New Mexico in her blood. Fond memories of my Uncle Dave meant he needed to be represented in my novella as well. He passed away awhile ago and we all feel the ache his absence left behind. When I wrote “Charlie”, my glorified version of an old cowboy, Uncle Dave was filtering into every sentence and scene.
Emilie here: Oh wow - it's amazing to hear the "story behind the story" in a sense, with this! I love that you choose a less represented state too. Those Texan's get all the stories *hehe*.
Writing
Let's talk about your writing life...
How long did you write before you got published?
Hmmmm….I have been writing since I was 13 with the intention to be published some day. Lofty intentions, to be sure. I had no idea the journey it would take me on. 26 years later, here I am. (you do math, yeah, I’m THAT old).
What advice would you give to aspiring authors for writing and/or publishing?
I think when I look at young writers now, I believe it’s dangerous to say that you’ll achieve your dreams if you just keep trying. The publishing world is iffy and ebbs and flows. If you attend a writer’s conference you’ll see hundreds of people with the SAME DREAM and yet a large publisher might only publish 7-15 fiction titles a year. That’s quite the odds. So you may be the BEST writer, and never see your name in print. So, sure aspire for it, reach for it, never quit, but write because you LOVE it. Write as if you never shared your work with anything other than your harddrive you’d be okay. Writing is in your blood.

What is your favorite genre to read? Why do you enjoy it? I love to read historicals with suspense and romance. I need plot. Straight up historical romance can be exceptionally well done if there’s a good driving plot beneath. It doesn’t have to involve murder (altho that’s always a plus). I love Erica Vetsch, for example, because while hers have zilcho to do with suspense she has snark riddled through her pages and a good story to go alongside the romance. I also love to read rom-com (Romantic Comedy) and Romantic Suspense.
What’s your favorite green food? (In honor of St. Patrick’s Day of course!)
My favorite green food, in honor of St. Paddy, is pistachio gelato. OMIGOSH. To die for.
What are you currently reading?
I am currently reading a few books (I always have more than one going). Sister Dear by Laura McNeill is my current open on the kindle. My paperback on the couch is The Fine Art of Murder by the dude who wrote Rambo. So good, but really thick, so it’s taking awhile. On my desk at work is The Distant Hours by Kate Morton. Also so good, also really thick.

Jaime Jo Wright | New Novel News
The Cowboy's Bride Collection
by Jaime Jo Wright
Released: March 1, 2016
From: Barbour
Purchase: The Cowboy's Bride Collection
Jonah Sparks thought he hired a foreman not a dictator, but when the firecracker CJ Matheson rides in to lasso the pieces of his mismanaged, New Mexico ranch, Jonah is ready to call it quits. She wasn’t supposed to be pretty. She wasn’t supposed be a she.
Get to know Jaime...
What prank would you want to play on your main character?
I would probably hang as many rubber spiders from the ceiling as possible and then cover her room wall-to-wall with thin, cobwebby material … all while she’s sleeping of course. Just IMAGINE waking up to that, when spiders are your phobia! :) (insert evil laugh here)
Would you rather go to the future or go to the past?
I would rather go into the past. It’s a fascinating place to be, I’m sure, and I’d like to visit ohhhhhh, so many places!
If you were stranded on an island what are three things you couldn’t live without?
Can I skip the Sunday School answers, because we all know I SHOULD say the Bible (which is true)? I couldn’t live without my French Press coffee maker, grounds included. My laptop with the magic ability to somehow connect to wifi in the middle of nowhere. A soft bed, because frankly, I love to sleep, and nothing is nicer than a cushy bed on a beach.
