Purchase: Bat Crazy

Monster Bats with red eyes that attack humans? Denton doesn’t think so and Alex hopes not, but who are they to quibble with the local gossip?

Transmission problems and a blown tire land Denton and Alex Davies right in the middle of a dilapidated, unfriendly town that’s welcoming no strangers, least of all nosy ones with a bent toward solving mysteries.

But with support from the town detective--an admirer of the Davies--and their own tenacious personalities, Denton and Alex aren’t easily scared off. Not when warnings in the form of painted bats show up on the porch of their rented cabin, not when the mayor threatens to run them out of town and not even when Denton finds the bones . . .

An ancient story, a bit of a map, a lost jewel and even a bat clan serve to provide the Davies and their sidekick, Taffy, the dog, their hardest case so far.

Get to know Carole...

What are the names of your pets?

One dog: Taffy, who looks like a Jack Russell. Showed up at our place and no one ever claimed her. At about the same time one of our horses died and the other one was grieving. When my husband and son came home that day, Taffy sat close to Shyenne. Whatever Taffy said to Shyenne we’ll never know, but from that day forward, Shyenne was fine!
Outdoor cats: Tipper (tiny, touchy/grouchy and found by son #1 in a school building being torn down when she was a kitten), Simon, Sandy
One horse: Shyenne

What are you reading right now?

Mary Ellis’s Midnight on the Mississippi (a mystery!)
Renee Blare’s To Soar on Eagle’s Wings
Norma Gail’s Land of My Dreams

If you were stranded on an island what are three things you couldn’t live without?

My husband
My grandsons
My computer! (Yeah, I know: probably no internet, but I could still write my novels on it! Oh, I’d have to have hubby rig up some kind of electricity gadget (whatever!). :)

Carole Brown | Spread the Christmas Joy

A Bundle of Love and Peace and Joy!

“Behold, I bring good tidings of great joy.”

I suppose one of my biggest desires I’ve had since my boys reached an age where they were considering marriage, was the time when I could become a grandmother. You see, I thought it would never happen. Sigh.

My husband (when the boys were growing up) ALWAYS teased that he didn’t want them to marry until they were thirty. Thirty? I just rolled my eyes. Until the years rolled by . . . And rolled by . . . And rolled by.

We did teach them to pray about choosing a life partner and they were confident that that was the way to go about knowing God’s choice of a companion. Finally, though, our youngest son married a woman with two sons.

Heaven! I immediately adopted them and jumped right into being a grandmother. Though they had a maternal grandmother, I reminded them often, I was the “fun-est” one ever! They grinned in agreement.

A few months later when I learned a baby was on the way, I was thrilled. And nine months later I was invited into the delivery room, was the first person (the other grandmother graciously gave me the opportunity) to hold that bundle of little joy. And the first Christmas we continued to thank God for the privilege of being grandparents. It’s still, two years later, one of the best Christmases I can remember.

God loves children (Become as one, he says), and I cannot doubt that he saw my longing for a precious grandchild.

Does God care about our “little” desires and wishes? Of course, he does? He delights in giving us good answers. He loves seeing us rejoice at his gifts to us. Did God really answer my prayers for grandchildren? Oh, yeah. I see the results. Merry Christmas!

Spread the Christmas Joy with Carole Brown | Day 7

Joy from Carole Brown

It was beyond thinking about for this woman who loves every bit of Christmas and the true meaning of Christmas, for this wife of a minister who gives so much to the church, and especially for this mother who shrank from having no money to buy Christmas gifts for her two young sons.

My husband, pastoring a small church, supplemented his income with carpentry work, which he loved doing. His excellent, particular work made him a favorite with friends and relatives and probably the good prices helped too.

Yet this year, work was skimpy and there just wasn’t enough money to buy Christmas for our boys let alone all the relatives to whom we were expected to give. Our hearts lifted heavenward to a Father who we knew had heard our prayers many times and who understood well enough a parent’s love for his/her children.

The month slid by. No money. As much as I loved Christmas, this year I felt doubt slide into the picture, tempting me to worry, complain, and fret with the situation. “O ye, of little faith!” were Jesus’ strong words to his beloved disciples, and well they could have been aimed at me.

How many times had God come to our rescue? How many times had he come through for our needs, and even our many wants? Yet, as the Israelites of Biblical times did, I doubted.

Of course, I missed shopping on “black Friday.” Yes, I missed weeks of fun and anticipation of buying and wrapping and seeing our sons delighted faces at the packages beneath the tree. But I also missed the peace that comes with perfect trust, the joy of knowing whatever God planned it was his perfect will for us, for me. In spite of that, two weeks before Christmas, a wonderful job was offered.

This year outside work has once again been skimpy. The economy, personal business reasons which hopefully will soon see results, and other factors make this another difficult year in certain ways. Yet somehow the fretting and worrying are not there. Sometimes temptation is lurking --close and real, if I want to take that route. Yet the peace that we are in God’s hands, that all things work together for our good, and that there are options, all make for a peaceful time.

It could be I’m older, perhaps it’s because I’ve learned a thing or two, or because some things don’t matter as much as it used to. But I like to think it’s because God has worked with me, loved me and taught me the real meaning of Christmas. Family and friends, simplicity and love. Those are the things that matter most.
